Terrible Film

The Runaways are a GREAT band, if for no other reason than they really were the 1st all female rock group. Also they had Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Sandy West! But it's Cherie Curry that defines the Runaways and their incredible story. Anyone who has read two chapters outta Cherie's autobiography can attest to the story that only she could live to tell. So why does this movie suck soooooo much? I thinnk the actors are average at best, for the most part, however I simply don't think that Dakota is as great as everyone else. I also think that Kristen Stewart overplays Jett, okay we get it - Joan Jett's a tough customer w/ a perennial snarl et al. I waited on this film FOREVER and actually thought that w/ the credibility that these two actresses have, that it might really showcase a great rock band. Nope. Instead it plays like a bad after school special! The worst scene is when Joan tells Cherie that "we got signed! Mercury #$@in records" Hilarious!!!! The director/producers etc. certainly hollywooded it up, waxing poetic over the crap and forgetting all the teeth to this story. But they didnt forget to put in all the lesbian scenes! So typical of Hollywood, ignore the rape of Cherie and the totally weird (but vital) chapter where crazy Kim Fowley takes the girls to "sex school," This is what happens to a great film when Hollywood gets ahold of it. Apparently the real Runaways were a part of this and all I can say is: I hope you got paid well! Oh and did I mention the actresses commentary! "So fun," says Dakota. This movie actually did the impossible. It made "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" starring Peter Frampton and the BG's look like Citizen Kane!

LET'S US GET a little rock & roll history RIGHT, shall we?

The Runaways were NOT the first all-female rock & roll band! Before them: Fanny (FOUR albums on the Warner Brothers label in the early 1970s); Goldie & the Gingerbreads (played clubs in NYC, popular in Europe, but didn't land a US record deal), Bertha, Isis, The Slits. There were others, even lesser-known, but there were MANY before them.

Thank you and the other posters who shared information about older all-female rock bands!

I knew just "The Ace Of Cups" (a good 60's rock band, all female), now I'm gonna search those above mentiones, I hope to discover some good rock n' roll!

BTW The Slits formed a year or two after The Runaways, I can't remeber if it was on 1976 for sure. They were very punk rock at their very beggining! Ari Up was as young as Cherie.

The all-girl band Fanny were signed in 1970, and there were a couple of all girl bands signed before them.

As far as I know, the first all-female rock band was the 60's rock band THE ACE OF CUPS.

I'm a fan of Joan Jett and The Runaways, and respect very much the talented Lita Ford and Sandy West.
I have never read Cherie Currie's autobiography, but I would like to.
But I do agree in almost everything else you said.

I think of Dakota Fanning as a good actress, and she deliver us a plain, uncharming and boring Cherie Currie. Kristen Stewart surprised me. I expected wood, but she was able to work under pressure (the big boss Joan herself), despite an "overacting".

This, sadly, wasn't a movie about "The Runaways". It was what Joan Jett and Cherie Currie wanted to show, through Hollywood glasses, aiming to that teen audience who doesn't even know who Joan Jett or Lita Ford are, but loves chicks with guitars who kisses each other and movies about other times, when teens got drunk and high and were "rock n' roll superstars".

It's an okay film, but as a fan of the band, it is overwhelmingly disappointing. I really wish the film was more about the band and less about the exaggerated relationship between Cherie and Joan.

When two of the four surviving members (one of whom is a 'Hollywood' Lawyer) of the band decline participation in the film and refuse to license their images, the filmmakers are stuck with what is left.
