The Go-Gos
The Donnas
The Runaways
En Vogue
Other
The Red Aunts
They aren't really my favorite per se, but I had the honour of shagging one of them so they will always have a special place in my heart.
The Runaways. lol
No Day But Today. Today 4 U. One Song Glory.
How we gonna pay last year's RENT?!

L7. The singer pulled her bloody pon out on stage and threw it at a guy. Supposedly.
The line begins to blur
The only genuine all girl bands that actually made it and became famous were the Bangles, Go-Go's and the Runaways. Assuming we're actually talking about bands as in they play instruments, otherwise you could also include Bananarama.
My favorite of all time though not really all girl is Heart. I would say technically they count because it's really always been about the two sisters and that's all who everyone remembers anyway, Ann and Nancy. Who can even name any of the dudes that have come and gone, I cant'.
Another band that no one mentioned although again technically not all girl but almost are The Corrs. 3 very hot and equally talented Irish sisters who can play every single instrument and one sad brother. :)
~What if this is as good as it gets!~
The Donnas (and the Runaways of course).

The Bangles did write a good deal of their own material, although most of their hit singles were cover tunes. Actually only 2 of the 11 songs on their debut album (their best, by most critical reviewers) were covers by outside writers.
By their later albums, while they were still writing songs, most of them were also co-written by "song doctors" so who knows how much of the songs the band members were actually writing.
Michael Steele, most people probably remember, was the original bassist in the Runaways, but quit/was fired before they got to the point of making a record.
Like the Runaways, the Bangles were in large part done in by outside "managers" driving wedges and convincing the lead singer she was destined for solo stardom and the other members throwing a fit.
If the Bangles (like the Runaways) had a manager with the idea of building a long-term future for the whole band rather than scoring the lead singer in a bikini pictorial in a grade-Z men's mag, they probably would have done fine.
Of course by all reports the Bangles also didn't have the ongoing drug problems which helped sink the Runaways.

I saw Girlschool open for Scorpions and Iron Maiden at the Long Beach Arena in 1982. They were amazing and I couldn't get "Yeah Right" out of my head for days!
The real world hurts, doesn't it? But you wouldn't know anything about that, would you?
Yep. I would have loved to have seen them with Motorhead, but instead I saw them three separate times in San Francisco, Berkeley and the L.A. area (Reseda maybe?). For two of those concerts we were front row, standing right in front of the stage.
As a buddy of mine described at the time, their performance was "flawless" - particularly guitarist Kelly Johnson. Sadly, she passed away at age 49 after fighting spinal cancer. I can't believe that was already 9 years ago.
