was Dan White gay?

my wife and i watched Milk the other night and she said that she got the impression that Dan White was a gay man in denial and took out his self hate on Harvey. did anyone else think that?

reply

He seemed to be a self-loathing latent homosexual who like a typical gay basher, lashes out at what he fears the most.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

I doubt it. Just because in the movie, Milk alludes to it, doesnt make it true. Milk seemed to be pretty obsessed with getting everyone out of the closet and seems the type that would confuse homophobia with homosexual self loathing. They sometimes go hand in hand, but not always.

"That man is dangerous."
Harvey and Doug were walking up the grand marble stairway beneath the city hall rotunda when Harvey nudged Doug and pointed to the handsome young man walking stiffly toward them. [...]
"Who's that?" Doug asked.
"That's Dan White," Harvey said, "He's a real closet case, someone fighting that inside of himself. He's that much more hostile to anyone who is open."

Now, for all I know, Randy Shilts may have misrepresented the facts of what Harvey said or didn't say, but the idea definitely didn't originate with the screenwriters.

Typical lame commiecrat crap. The facts are that Dan White didn't kill Milk because he was gay; he might have loathed him for that, but ultimately he killed Milk (and Moscone) because they stabbed him in the back politically.

thats the other impression I got from the movie

I don't think there is concrete evidence either way.

I think Dan White was envious of Milk's organic political skill. He wanted an issue, like Harvey had. He never seemed to understand that Harvey Milk and his like were literally fighting for their lives, it wasn't just another political 'issue'.
