Why is it called Knight and Day?

If their names aren't Knight or Day? I signed onto imdb expecting to see Tom Cruise as Steve Knight and Cameron Diaz as Sun Day. What is this crap!

Wow I can't believe Im going to have to explain this but his real last name was Knight....and a play on words night and day...Cameron being Day and Cruise being night...two opposites that attract...

Best answer of all.

Cruise's character's last name WAS Knight...when he was a kid and before he joined the special unit. When Diaz went to his parents' house the mailbox said "Knight". Then I guess, it's the "two opposites pun."

reply

Okay everybody... I think we know where Knight came from now, lol.

Knight was Roy Miller's real last name. His mother is Molly Knight.

Not sure about Day.

reply

Did you guys WATCH the movie??? Wow. Toward the end of the movie when Cameron Diaz's character went to the house to see the old couple, their name was KNIGHT and they turned out to be Tom Cruise's characters parents. The title was supposed to be a play on the expression-"The Difference Between Knight & Day..." The name KNIGHT was clearly written on the mailbox outside the house!!!

reply

How did this title confuse anyone?

Not only is it in reference to the differences between the two main characters, it's clever because of the word play.

Seriously, how did this make it past one reply?

Tom's character IS called Knight. That is his real name, see the scene at his parents house. The reference to day could be the fact that they list the things that they both want to do "Some Day", see scenes early on and the final scene. The fact that Tom and Cameron's characters are complete opposites is also summed up by the phrase "As different as night and day".

he's a knight. she's part of the day. duh.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"

posted this on the wrong board earlier . . .oops!

I could be stretching a bit . . . but i think they named it Knight and Day to show the differences between Roy and June.

Obviously it's a play on the words "night and day" showing that Roy and June were as far apart as two people could be, yet they complimented each other.

Roy is a really capable guy. He's always stating the obvious in an understated way. he comes across as mentally unstable, yet he's a capable guy. On the other hand, we have June who comes across as stable, but she's really an anxious person and keeps freaking out during the entire movie until she gets some of Roy's confidence.

So we have these two opposite characters who are Night and Day, complimenting each other, improving the other, and they chose to play on the word "Night" with "Knight," implying he's a rescuer and the complete opposite of June's character, yet somehow a compliment to her.

I don't know if people picked up the references to their differences throughout the movie. Roy is always calm. June freaks out. Roy understates. June overstates. Roy's comments that June's ex wasn't a good match; June stating that Roy made her feel confident and capable. Roy saying that "someday" was a code word for "never" and June saying "it's someday." the whole "with me/without me" speech, all showing that they needed each other. Night follows Day and vice versa as even throughout the film, he comes after her, she goes after him.

Tom Cruises real name was Knight. They showed that on his parents mailboxes. I don't under why her name wasn't Day. But why did her name have to be Sun Day?

reply

Actually it's a remake of Knight Rider and he is given the name Michael Knight after he 'dies' and is brought back.
The new car is called the D.A.Y. or Destroy All Yesterdays due to it's ability to alter previous events in people’s minds.
You learn it at the start of the movie so it’s not really a spoiler.
Cameron Diaz is actually a spy for the Russians trying to steal the technology, that’s a spoiler.
