The Purse
Am I the only one who thinks that the Louis Voutton (sp?) purse Louise received as a Christmas gift was ugly as sin? Why would anyone pay a ridiculous amount of money for that ugly thing?!

shareI never carry a purse - the first thing I check for in the clothes I buy is good pockets for my phone & debit card - so I'm probably not the target audience anyway, but yes, that purse was hideous.
(Tangent: Remember that jewelled animal purse Big gave Carrie during the series? I was always confused that she thought it was hideous, considering the stunningly broad range of ugly/odd/eccentric clothes, shoes, purses, and other accessories she had. How would anyone ever know what to give Carrie as a gift, considering all of the awful things she apparently thought were gorgeous?!?)
I didn't carry a purse for several years, after being mugged at gunpoint walking home from the store with my mother. Traumatic experience, I carried the minimum of things on me and in pockets only for a long while after that. My mother still doesn't carry a purse to this day, and this happened 25 years ago! I'm a purse user once again though, I like a beautiful, good quality bag. My splurge 10 years ago was a good sized black leather tote from Dooney & Burke that fits my work laptop. Still in perfect condition, I'll probably never have to replace it - worth the money to me.
That animal bag, It was a swan bag by Judith Leiber, and a bag that size by her can cost between $3000-$6000. Crazy.
I agree with many of the posters that the bags in this movie, and in the series, were hideous. There's no way I'd carry a bag loaded with bling, extraneous hardware or the designers' names or initials. Not to mention the huge price tags and the fact that so many designer bags not purchased from the designers' stores are fake.
If I could get away with not carrying a bag I would. As I can't usually I go for a lightweight leather crossbody so my hands are free.
If you don't mind me asking, how much was the D&B tote? I agree with you that it can be worth it to spend more than usual on something that will last you a long time. I still use the Calvin Klein winter coat I bought around 5 years ago, although admittedly it's finally showing some wear!
shareIt was the ugliest bag I've ever seen! If someone can't afford their own designer bag and you buy one for them, why oh why would you not play it safe and get them a nice black handbag! That's actually stylish! And will actually go with everything! Instead of a bag that looks like it was made of scraps of crap found in a bin!
shareYou are right. I'd rather carry around the cupcake purse.
Sophia: I look like a slut. Ariel: But a nice slut.

I know what I like and I know what I don't like and I DON'T like this handbag! Was it just made up for this movie?? It wasn't really on the market, was it?
shareI know, that LV bag was horrible! LV has much better stuff. The bag was very tacky. Personally, I have designer bags but I avoid the ones that have the logo all over. Discretion is the key.

IKR? Some guy wanted to get me a new coat to wear at a tournament he was in. I was just going to accompany for support and we were going to be out in cold weather. One store had some ok looking ones (I was being picky) but, they all had the store logo stamped on everything quite obviously. I told them straight that I could not wear THAT to a tournament. I just went with an old coat. It looked better than what the stores had at the time.
shareThis is a big bug bear for me.
I love a nice bag and when she went to give her the big box I thought she would have a beautiful and classic bag that would go with everything and be in style for years to come.
No, she gave her a piece of junk that goes with nothing and looks like one of the cheapest bags you can get off of a market stall.
For someone who cannot afford a designer bag it would have been nice to give a timeless piece IMO.
I cannot believe LV can even make a bag that ugly, but for it to be a feature I was shocked. Awful bag and I think about it often.
This thread perfectly describes my main issue with the movie. What irked me about the film was how stereotypically "fashiony" all the clothing and accessories were in the movie, to a point where the costuming really didn't coexist well with the characters and their stories. I'll be the first to admit that fashion choices are highly personal and often arbitrary, and what some people hate, others love. But it seemed to me that the film gave way too much screen-time to goods of designers only trying to plug off-the-wall creations in an effort to boost their own sales of items that would be highly unmarketable generally. That first dress (the white thing with that gigantic flower on the shoulder) really hit me hard. It's not that it was ugly (it was a catastrophe, but again, reasonable minds can differ over such a thing), but it seemed like an obvious product push, with no regards to making the costuming organic to the storyline. I just didn't believe that SJP's character would be out prancing around NY streets midday in a mini-skirt length dress (isn't she almost 50 in this movie) with a giant flower on her shoulder. The costuming just didn't seem in line with the character and her situation. I feel like an California Raisin Halloween costume wouldn't have been more conspicuous. It's been a while since I was last in NY, but I don't recall people running around in anything quite like that. The LV bag was another glaring odd-ball choice. While I'm in agreement with the "hideous" crowd (it was ghastly), aside from that, the choice of that particular bag seemed, again, very incongruous with the story lines. Perhaps a fashion-forward women with a penchant for high-end designer labels would feel compelled to buy something of that price for an employee; but that screwy-looking bag, along with the actual MSRP of the bag really didn't fit the story line well. I didn't believe a person (even a fashion-forward woman) would purchase such a visually-strange item for an employee. Although I don't know for sure, I'm assuming LV paid some stupidly high amount of cash to feature that bag in the film. And the presence of THAT bag made it seem like the costuming decisions were made by the highest-bidding designer, as opposed to a skilled costumer designing looks and styles based on actual character situations and storylines. Overall, I thought the fashion in the film was very poorly chosen (the wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses came across hackneyed as a desperate attempt to keep the fashion-forward theme of the franchise). It was crazy and out-there simply for the sake of being forward and daring without any consideration for the story (who the hell gives a child a $3k crystal cupcake bag, even for a one-time use at a wedding?).
shareI thought it was a cool looking item. It had style.
