When he went for the gun, he needed to move fast. Run for the gun, grab, and exit. Instead, he took his time looking around, moving slowly. Then when he got the gun, he took time to look admiringly at it and say “Yeah!”
And then, when he trips over himself, he lets off a shot.
What a lousy way to go
