Vines? Really?

You're making a horror movie set in an ancient Mayan temple and the best antagonist you can come up with is friggin vines? I mean, an angry god, vengeful spirits, ancient skeletal zombies, there are so many cool directions they could've gone with this yet they settled on killer plants? I mean I know this is based on a book so it's not REALLY the filmmakers' faults but still, plants are not effective horror villains and the trailers don't really explain much so I was kinda let down by this one.

I thought it was very original. If I see another vampire movie, I'm going to start smacking people. Lol But vines...that enter your body like a parasite, and people who won't let you leave once you're "infected"...seeing how everyone acts when they realize they're going to die...I really like it. Dimitri's death, right after they'd been laughing and joking around, really took me by surprise.
Vamps, zombies, aliens...Done to death. This is a new "bad guy" that's long overdue.

Yes, the shortage of zombie movies released is really quite frustrating. We need more of them. Not.

That's your opinion, but I happen to be a fan of the zombie genre and I just think killer plants is kind of a silly idea.

They may be no shortage of zombie movies but there aren't any overwhelming number of well made ones. Ancient Mayan zombies would have been better than plants.

reply

Agreed. The film just wasn't scary to me and I think it's because the antagonist isn't inherently scary.

And that after all, is just your opinion, isn't it?

This movie was well-written, the storyline is great and so are the actors. You can't just look at the movie and say oh it's about killer Vines, you have to realize it's about paranoia also

Well said

Ever get poison ivy?

Actually it's a much more plauseable scenario than zombies or vampires since similar plants exist and the others don't.
Thinking of plants as villains is a silly approach anyway.

I actually thought it was a ridiculous idea for a film but when I heard it was based on a book that had critical praise I bought it (the book that is) just outta curiosity because it's bloody VINES that kill folk(?!) and the book was over 500 pages long, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I read, it was quite boring in places but the book focused more on the paranoia that the trapped folk experienced and the utterly bleak second half of the book was quite shocking and, again, surprised me. I've yet to see the movie and I'm guessing the low scores are due to the movie makers focusing more on the killer plant aspect instead of the characters own experiences maybe?

Read the book. If you read.
