I Fell in love with Prince Albert

I loved him he was perfect for her!
This movie is beautiful and Emily great!
I hope to find my Albert some day!

reply

He was so great!
He was the only one who was not trying to get something from her. She was very lucky to have found him. He truly loved her.

Unlike Melbourne (who in real life was almost 40 years older than Victoria) who wanted to exploit his control over Victoria, Albert truly wanted to have an equal, working partnership. He was a man ahead of his time who helped foster the arts and science in England. He helped bring England into the 20th century with his progressive thinking.

plus he was the one who transported the Christmas tree from German family life...so we should thank him for that if nothing else...

Oh, me too. I'm seeking out all the movies that Rupert Friend has been in. ;) The actors had such wonderful chemistry.

reply

If you're going to see all of Rupert's movies, try to watch them chronologically:

The Libertine
Outlaw
Mrs. Palfrey
(unfortunately he was in two horrible bombs after that -- but his short stint in Virgin Territory is worth slogging through that movie)
then The Moon and the Stars (it went straight to DVD in the U.S.)
Boy in Striped Pyjamas
Cheri
and Young Victoria

You'll see his acting really mature and take shape. Have fun!

Don't forget Pride and Prejudice.

Albert had a bum rap for many years, including when he was actually alive. He was badly misunderstood by the British people, who didn't get what he was trying to do with his various reforms. Kind of like the way Prince Charles is seen today by some people.

And Albert's the one who brought Christmas trees and big holiday celebrations to England!

reply

I loved the little touches of showing how he was in love with her, like how excited he was to get her letters.

One other thing is that the struggle Albert had with feeling like a man in his marriage despite the fact the Victoria was his sovereign. I think that Albert was actually in charge of the family, though I'm not certain of it.

When I first read a biography of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert really stood out to me as the perfect man for her. Quiet, unassuming, handsome, calm in the face of troubles, a loving husband and father, yet with firm convictions and morals. They truly did love each other, which was very nice in the era of arranged marriages. I felt so sorry for her when he died in the book. She was heartbroken.

reply

Do you know the name of the biography, author's name? I would love to read a good biography on Queen Victoria. THanks!

reply

It's called "Victoria, R. I." by Elizabeth Longford. It's a classic. She draws on Victoria's personal diaries and correspondence with Albert.

I was reading that during a trip to England with my (now, sadly late) grandma. She asked, "How's Victoria doing?" as I progressed through the book. "Oh, she just had ANOTHER baby..."

reply

I cant believe someone compared the wonderful Prince Albert to the bumbling cracker jack Prince Charles.

I loved it, too, and thought that the casting was great. I would have liked to have seen more Miranda Richardson and Jim Broadbent, and I wished someone age-appropriate had been cast as Lord Melbourne. Maybe Anthony Hopkins was not available (and I could easily see an impressionable young girl fall for Anthony Hopkins. He will always be hot). Someone may have already mentioned it, but I was glad that the famous Victoria-watches-adoringly-while-Albert-shaves episode was left out. I know that it was true, but tiresome to see in every production about Queen Victoria.
