I for one cant stand April..

F-ck you April.............!!!!!! I just watched this Movie again, for the 4th time. Every time I watch it, I loathe April just a bit more than before..What a G.D bitch she is....Frank seems to try every and any way possible to be a good man to her....April is constantly thinking of herself and treating Frank like an ass. He tries to talk with.Tries to support her. Gives her a nice home..What does he get in return? All her BS is what.....F-ck You April....!

It's a bit more complicated than that. At the core of it, I do think April loved Frank. Suburbia and conformity were what destroyed her. She was a desperate woman looking for a way out.

"'When you are grown up and very lonely, you will understand. Love, Uncle Fester.'....He's a dead man."

reply

That's exactly how I felt about her as well. I just couldn't sympathize with her at all. Frank didn't force her to marry him and yet she takes it out on him like it's all his fault when she put herself in that situation. If she hated him like she said, then get the hell out and divorce him. I could even understand Frank when he cheated on her so he could get some appreciation. I thought it was spot on when he called her an empty shell of a woman.

The function of music is to release us from the tyranny of conscious thought.

I also found her repugnant, but Frank was no prize, either. I don't recall more stridently wishing a pair of lead actors would befall a tragic, terminal, and quite messy automobile accident.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

its interesting how different people SEE the movie. what you think is completely different to what i saw; April was behaving so unselfishly that she was prepared to work as a Secretary as oppose to her dream of an actress all so that Frank could find out what he really wanted to do with his life cause she knew how unhappy he was with his life and job - he was just putting on a fake show of happiness like all the other people living there. the film is about being real and true to yourself and i think it shows alot about a person as to how differently they see this movie. brilliant.

I don't think either Frank or April were unselfish. They were both very selfish and immature people.

Because her dream of being an actress died on the vine, she wanted another dream to replace it. So she decided to latch onto Frank's old dream of Paris and live through him.

Believe me, if they had gotten themselves to Paris the same problems would have kept appearing. They weren't dealing with reality.

reply

What April was going through was very real. She was dissatisfied. Her life seemed to lack purpose to her.

Frank on the other hand had kind of grown into his situation and was okay with where he was, and where he was going.

He didn't understand her, and she didn't understand him. It's the age-old story.

Frank was just too scared to live life. He settled because it was comfortable, not because it made him feel satisfied. Quite the opposite, which explains the affair. It just goes to show money can't buy happiness. Your family experience and relations are so much more important than the size of the house you live in. I feel like if you ever have extra money, don't buy me a fancy car or new piece of jewelry. Yes, those things are nice but I'd much rather take a trip and make a memory.

Yeah, yeah, yeah poor innocent Frank was a complete saint who could never do anything wrong in your eyes and April was just a PMS ridden bitch

Ashmi any question

reply

no one said anything about april being a PMS ridden bitch. april was clearly dealing with a mental illness frank could not understand and this being the 50's, he couldn't just walk out on her and the children. hell, if he left the children with her, who knows what might have happened. but yes, april was the instigator of the fights 99% of the time.

Agreed all the way. The woman had a plethora of serious problems, most which require medicine nowadays or else it's off to the looney bin.

She married Frank. She had two kids with him. They were basically living the American dream and she selfishly wanted something else? For what reason? Mostly selfishness.

Her idea of the future in Europe was unrealistic as everyone else in the film had said. No, you can't just get a governmental secretarial job with some work history in bad plays. On top of that, I'm not sure you could also provide for three others while maintaining a good quality of life.

She murdered her and Frank's child. She cheated on him. Let's see... The screaming scene. Everything. The entire time I was saying, "Get rid of her." I'm surprised Frank kept going back and apologizing and such.

Anyway, entitled white woman who thinks her happiness comes first is the most important thing, etc. She was blinded by her ignorance and didn't deserve Frank.

And as others have said, Frank wasn't the best person either, but I think the movie's focus is on just how twisted April is.

She didn't murder their child though

reply

Yes she did.

There's a deleted scene in which April is living with an older relative and her father pops in for a quick visit. It helps to explain why she had difficulty connecting, especially to men.

Frank felt inadequate, as most husbands would at the time, because he couldn't make her happy. He would then poorly express his frustration by belittling her acting, having sex with other women, and telling his wife about his indiscretions.

reply

One reason people have such an easy time disliking April is because this couple seemingly had what many people today cherish. He had a good steady job where he could apparently work all his life, where he made good money and he was going to make more. The wife didn't have to work. They had a nice house in a good neighborhood. They had two good kids and they could afford a third.

Most people today wish they could have that. There is no job security and the American dream is harder and harder to attain.
