Does Anyone Actually Like This Show

Did anyone like or even enjoy the show at all?? I found it to be quite good, yes I liked the original film and yes my husband thinks it does not carry on the original theme (and no not just the music)

But I liked it a lot and would loved to have seen it carry on, I love Flash, Bailin is so dryly funny and as for the zarcof (excuse the spelling mistake if any) well in the film he was nuts in a weirdo way but in this one he is a cowardly numpty who is quite funny

So to say the series had no feeling is a little off as it has some good parts to it, including the dodgy wedding where Flash's fellow workman gets stung and goes a bit blissfully happy, watching Dale try and bring him down was amusing

Well if anyone out there did enjoy feel free to get back to me

Far from the only other fan ... I'm one and know a lot more, Lenox. You know, if you don't like a show, putting yourself thru the experience of having to write about it just sort of makes you look .... well .... STUPID.

Its TV. If you don't like it there are literally hundreds of other channels. This is a web site about every movie and TV show. If you don't like it, there are pages on this database for every show that you do like.

When you spend time on this instead of programming that you like and approve of, the intelligent contributors here have legitimate reasons to wonder about you.

nichols, the title of your post speaks volumes. It wouldn't have come to your mind for a title if it weren't for the fact that you may have noticed that most of the posts for this show on IMDB are of the negative nature. I'm not going to state that you are a weirdo for liking this show. Just understand that most people were upset that this show was not very true to the oringinal look, feel, and most important, the spirit of the original version of Flash Gordon.

For what it's worth, I enjoyed the show as well. Not as a fabulous series, but for it's humor (unintentional or not) and decent ending. My only regrets were that the series didn't start at the same level as the ending and that the writers couldn't get their acts together for some of the arcs.

reply

I enjoyed certain aspects of the show individually, but feel that overall as a re-imagining it was terminally lacking direction.

For example, Ming having a public persona of "benevolent father" was a cool idea, but suited to a more contemporary and less-campy retelling of the Flash Gordon story, which could’ve had potential if they had followed up on the idea.

Similarly though I could’ve also enjoyed a purely tongue-in-cheek classic style campy sci-fi adventure with over the top villains and classic heroism. The success of new Battlestar doesn’t mean everything has to be made dark and gritty in order to be palatable to a modern audience.

They should’ve picked one of these themes and maintained it throughout the series instead they attempted to do both and failed. I'll happily watch the next incarnation of the franchise next and hope the people who made it were at least able to learn from this.

reply

Yeah, a lot of the ideas that they had were good, but they never really started to *use* them. At the beginning of the series, an enemy would be sent to Earth, defeated, and sent back. They hardly carried anything new over. Take for example the episode with Baylin's husband. There was so much potential in that, going over her being sold, living with him, his own feelings for her. All that we got was one episode: "I love you!" "I hate you!" *zap* "Okay, he's gone".

So can I take it that you didn't like this series? :)

reply

My reasonably good contacts in the SF community tend to agree with me -no one has said they like it - most have forgotten it exists - I frankly did (saw it in a list of a person I was IMDB tracking and popped over - remembered I had seen portions of episodes and had honestly just forgotten about it). To the best of my memory it had bad special effects, an idiot Zarkoff, all sorts of things taking place in the same meadow (I assume someone involved with the production owned that piece of land) and Mongo scenes that were way darker than made sense unless you were trying to disguise low quality sets. IIRC, the acting matched the effects and sets. Also, the females tended to be overdressed - even if you base it on the original serial. Sometimes, I will at least DVD it if that is done properly - and I assume there are plenty of females who would do the same if it went the other way (I have good knowledge of Fan-fic, yaoi and vids/vidding and I seriously doubt this show will be the subject of either the 1st or 3rd of these and yaoi doesn't apply).

Basically, total waste of media space and time.

Watched the first 2 episode it had worse sf then power rangers there is a lot that's wrong with the show so don't get me started. What I don't understand is why it has a 7.3 when it deserves a 1.

100% dead-on! Basically the same sin committed by the folks who did Enterprise; too many ideas, too many tangents, absolutely NO direction!

Liberals are funny sad -and a lot !!!

reply

IT'S NOT BECAUSE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE LOVE SOMETHING THAT IT IS A GOOD THING.... Enterprise was one of my favourite tv show and i am a big fan of the original serie. Anyway Flash Gordon is what it is, a decent and funny tv-show to watch friday night in family, nothing more, but nothing less

It is what it is, and the sin is the sin-too much, too far, too fast. Moderation in all things is the key... I honestly won't lose sleep if it is cancelled, I really haven't been able to keep up with it.

Amen, Hap! Aside from the names of the characters there is NOTHING that resembles the original Flash! The best treating is the 1980 movie...

Sage, I dare say that most likely there not ,"licking their wounds and tending to their bruised egos...". They are just people paid to influence the masses with their postings of absolute goodness of whatever show their supposed to shout to the hills about. It's just a paycheck, and by now they have moved on to another gig.

reply

I have to respectfully disagree-I believe that most of these folks honestly liked the show. Remember, there are folks that liked the odd numbered Star Trek films as well... Basically, to each his own and there is no accounting for taste!!!

reply

You have a valid point. I'm just basing my thoughts and assumptions on the fact that if they were true fans of this show, how come they aren't posting anymore on this board? Surely it can't be due to the fact that they're afraid of Lennox and Smeg.

reply

I would hazard that at this point they are "saving their breath to blow on their soup." They realize the futility of arguing to save a show that is already dead and stinkin'. And honestly, they shouldn't fear anyone in here-no matter how much a bully they may be (AND I'M NOT SAYING THAT EITHER OF THEM ARE-JUST A 'FOR INSTANCE'!) since the magick ignore button exists...

How so, Hap? I thought the chicks were pretty hot, myself... And I agree, I was really looking forward to a new Flash Gordon program and was greatly disappointed. The premise was interesting; Mongo being a planet on a seperate plane with wormhole access instead of blasting planets into moons. But that was the high point for me! "Benevolant Father?" No one ever spoke that kindly about Ming-even to his face!!! The Hawkmen were just downright embarassing!!! It shared nothing at all with the original, beloved Flash Gordon except the names of the characters!

All I can say is:YUP! AMEN! Except for the the stuff about the chicks, I thought they were all pretty decent looking. Acting? I didn't even notice they were saying anything, I was too busy staring at their chi-chi's... Even Jill Teed was pretty hot in her own mature, not ready for AARP kind of way! I saw Karen Cliche (Baylin) in something else, I don't remember what, but she was pretty great looking and able to act. I think that this role, going back to what you noted, was hamstrung by poor writing. And Carrie Genzel-WOW! But in my own defense-these were about the only redeeming qualities to this show...

It's complete and utter rubbish. But we've come to expect that from the Sci Fi Channel in recent years.

Having been a fan of the black and white version and thrown things at the screen while they changed reels, I have a long lasting love of FG :-: - Oh, WOW EEEEEE, 92 (my maths teachers age) - and can type too!

Yes, I like this FG. I like the hark back to the original, the Freudian references that we didn't have in the 1940, I like the modern-day sexual references that go back to the first Superman movie and the whole chic, chic, cliche thing that goes on, which also has links to things like the jokes in Stargate and Bloodties. (men and women swooning over each other and 'winking' etc)

Hated, absolutely needed a pint of vodka for the FG move!!!!!!

We need a second series of this but work on the jokes - make it a *very* tongue in cheek thing*. Lots of Flash saves the world and the universe but also 'oh no, not again, can't I ever get a break' (for male and female characters).

Basically, pick a theme/plot, write a scrip t and think of the sassy characeters of the 1930's and 40's films and what is now called Old Time Radio - Miss Brookes and Maisie and Boston Blackie.

You may notice, "those" (perhaps multiple 'personalities' of one) who so vehemently hate the current version are those who consider the 1980 version as if it was the only version worth watching. And yet, instead of trying to wear out their DVD trying to memorize and glorify every second of it, "they" are committed to carrying the torch for it here whilst smiting any and all of the infidels who have the nerve to like what they do not. Pity "them" but do not waste time trying to interact with their broken record mentality.

On the board of another SciFi Channel series "doomed to utter failure" and still going years later, a multi-named troll wrote that he absolutely hated the remake series so much he could not watch more than a few minutes without puking, and yet he forced himself to watch every second of it over and over so he could post negative comments about any given scene. Meanwhile defending the "original" as if it was actually better (or even good) although it aired fewer episodes over a shorter time frame.

As regards the "holy" 1980 version of Flash Gordon - why no sequel or prequel or spin-off or TV series? As I remember, it was not the runaway hit of year, as compared to other films. And, although it still has a fanatical cult following today, so do many other films with even less to offer. "I personally think "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" (the Original version!!!) is just the best movie ever, and SciFi Channel ought to do a series faithful to it!!!" But, if they did, the fanatical cult following would picket the SciFi Channel headquarters in droves...

Well, despite what many of you are saying, I loved the show. It was a reimagining, NOT a recreation and therefore wasn't under any obligation to stick to the original concepts and plots and characterizations of the serials or even the movie. The characters were engaging, the dialog had its funny moments as did some of the visual humor. I 'm glad the writers didn't make these character's personalities basically what they were in the past. And I'm glad they came up with differing plots. The special effects weren't terrible. At least it wasn't a lousy soap-opera in space pawned off as a SciFi series. Yes, it had it's weakpoints, but I overlooked them simply because I was willing to enjoy it as presented. And just for everyone's edification, there WERE fans on the forums. Not everyone was a nay-sayer, it's just that the nay-sayers were a whole lot more vocal and obnoxious.
