Why start the TV series when not all of the books are out yet? WAIT A LITTLE! It didn't do Lord of the Rings any harm, now did it? If HBO and Dumb and Dumber hadn't got so greedy and just waited, maybe GRRM would've actually finished the books instead of stopping writing them.
Perhaps but maybe not. I think having the shows hurtling toward an ending you haven't written yet would motivate most people to get it done. It would have been impossible to predict doing the shows would turn him into a lazy sloth incapable of finishing the books.
With the benefit of foresight knowing the shows would have that effect on him it would be an easy decision to wait for him to finish.

You seem to think that hype and pressure will speed up the process of writing.
Of course SOME people do their best work under pressure but to others, pressure is the death of creativity. I don’t know if this is the case with GRRM, but I do know it happens.
That's not what I meant. I think he hasn't had a desire to finish the books for a while now. He's kind of busy basking in adoration of his fans.
But because such a large chunk of them (us) were disappointed by the show's finale it's not impossible he will have some motivation now. You know, to show that he can do better. I certainly hope so.

Who knows? There's no guarantee he would or ever will finish the books regardless if there was a series or not.
I'm glad for what we do have even though the last of it was tainted by being rushed..It still was a nice ride and I'm not throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Err... they should have started filming after he finished all of the books - I suspect he didn't finish 'em cause he was making so much dough from the tv series - and it did require his guidance in many instances, so he had little time for writing shit.
The prob is - now he's doing the spin-off shit and that implies he won't ever get around to finishing the books, cause morons will eat his spin-off shit just the same, giving him plenty of dough and again requiring his guidance - so no time for writing crap.
