S8 E1: Slightly disappointing - and then there's Bran (some spoilers)

My expectations were high after an almost two-year wait. And it was quite clear that these expectations could not be fulfilled.

But the first episode was still a bit of a let-down. At times it felt like Fashion Week at Winterfell. Every character got a few seconds of screentime on Winterfells Red Carpet. But not much happened. Jon and Daenerys riding Dragons was very underwhelming, unecessary and looked worse animated than in other seasons.

Sam got mad a bit and lost more of my sympathy points towards him (and boy, did he even have few to begin with). Lyanna Mormont is annyoing as ever (can't see why she is so popular; just a big-mouthed brat). Sansa acts more bitchy than ever and turn to be from a favourite character to somebody I can't wait to be killed off.

On the other hand it was nice to see The Hound and Arya to meet again in a short scene and watching Theon getting some temporary balls for a while, rescuing his sister.

Of course, the first episode just slowly sets things up for the rest of the season, but still just too less actually happened. It's like they wanted us to present all characters again after the long break. But I just rewatched all seasons, I don't need to be brought up to date.

And then there's Bran:

I know he's supposed to be the wise, future-seeing and future-telling all-knowing character. But he appears more than a wise-ass than a wise man. I really don't know if it's the lack of talent by the actor Isaac Hempstead Wright, bad directing or really intended. But I really can't look at this face and the lack of any movement and emotion anymore. If I want to see something like that, I could watch Steven Seagal in any of his movies. It's like watching a potatoe grow. Just less interesting.

He's not really Bran anymore. Remember the last 3 eyed raven sat in the same place so long that the tree riots grew into him.

reply

Yeah, he is a different person now. But still, his emotionless portrayal of the character - intended or not - is hard to watch and endure.

reply

It is intended, so it probably is not bad acting. IHW said in an interview that he took inspiration from the character of Dr Manhattan, and that he intended to be an emotionless speaking brain.

That said, yeah, it's getting rather annoying.

I liked the episode, but have to say I found myself nodding in agreement with everything you wrote.

reply

I like Bran, I just wish he had more lines.
