...about Tyrion killing his son with wildfire as if it was no skin off his nose. Would a father really talk like that about the death of his son to the person responsible for it? Just making a flippant remark like it didn't really bother him. I don't know, but I found it off putting and another sign of the dumbing down of the Series overall. Anyone agree?
Still to be face to face with the 'killer', even if it was war, and make that flippant remark, well a loving father would have never made it imo. He would never have made a flippant remark like that about Shireen, even if she had died in war.
By the same token, a loving father wouldn't have sentenced his son to die knowing he was innocent just because he was a dwarf. A loving father would have bended the knee to save his son. I think you are confusing real life culture with a fictional medieval culture.
I know, but Davos is presented as a caring person, hence his affection for Shireen etc, ....and unlike Tywin Lannister who has always been presented as a cold hearted ambitious bastard.
Would it have been more satisfying to see a long scene in which he's bitching out Tyrion or trying to kill him? The fact that he brought it up at all is proof enough that he loved his son.
He has no reason to be sorry. They were on opposing sides of a war. He didn't know the names of anyone at Blackwater. Now they are on the same side. I think you're being over sensitive about the scene.
I'm not being over sensitive. If Davos wouldn't have said anything at all, then I would have been fine with it. But sure, Tyrion probably didn't know who all those men they were, I agree.
I don't think he was flippant about it at all. Also I think it's ridiculous to compare it to Shireen. Davos' son was a grown man and soldier who died honorably in war. Shireen was a little girl who was cruelly murdered, burned to death as a human sacrifice. It's two completely different situations. Davos could make peace with the way his son died (doesn't mean he doesn't love him or miss him), but what happened to Shireen was a completely different thing.
We knew that Lord Tarly was an asshole back in season 1, when he forced his eldest son to join the Night's Watch knowing full well that he'd be miserable and would probably get killed.
He was shown to be a total asshole who'd sacrifice anyone and anything to achieve his ends back then, and that's exactly how he went out. He sacrificed the second son the way he sacrificed the first.
Actually, he was surprisingly light spirited about having Stannis cut off part of his hand, which would have made a lot of people rather bitter.
He's a very caring person, but he lives in an extremely violent and cruel world, and has learned to disconnect himself emotionally from the horrors of his world.
I agree with GunWillTravel.
On top of that, when Gendry asked how Davos’s son died (back in the cell at Dragonstone), Davos replied: »Following me.«
He didn't say: »He was killed by a dwarf.«
So obviously, Davos is mostly blaming himself for Matthos’ death – which is no untypical parental behavior I guess.
Davos' son is as much to blame as Tyrion. He was all gung ho for the fire cult and would have been OK if Davos was burned at the stake. Nonetheless, Davos tried to convince him that Melisandre was bad news and he should not to go to the battle because he would probably die. Davos cared for him, but at the same time he was old enough to make his own decisions.
At this point why have it an issue? It was not as if Tyrion went after his son specifically and it has been years. They were going into a battle and the risk was death.
Thanks, just because I don't agree with you you have to say my thread is dumb. I thought the remark sounded a bit 'flippant', but if you don't, fine. Like I said before, I'll have to rewatch but that was my first impression.
I get you and maybe even agree
But i also think that The Onion Knight is a pragmatic/realist type of guy...
Horrible things have happenened to everybody in this story
It's like the Westerosi version of wwII
A slaughtered son=a raped daughter=Destroyed village...its all pretty terrible if i think about it
I think the episode was mostly about funneling remaining characters on to the same side, fighting for the same cause where many of these characters were on opposing sides previously. I didn't view Davos' remark about his son as flippant. I viewed it as his way of expressing to Tyrion that they don't have time to fight with each other, or mourn about the past when they have bigger things to worry about in the near future.
As if to say to say they're on the same team now, and he doesn't harbor any personal hatred towards Tyrion for what happened in a war that occurred a few years ago. War's hell. People die. We gotta keep our heads straight before we all die.
Yes obviously they have to show there are no 'hard feelings' and that they are fighting for the same side now. I don't think it's realilstic though. I'm sure there would be some hard feelings, even if it was just a tiny bit.
But Davos has seen incredible things, like Jon Snow brought back to live, so I guess he knows there's an ulterior mission at hand.
Yep, and that's why whenever he appears on screen I say out loud, in front of the TV, "Ser Davos!" You can always tell a good scene is coming up when Davos appears on screen.
