Am I the only one that didn't see the twist coming at all? (spoilers)

Apparently, the fact that Winter was a bad guy was very predictable. I was shocked.

the thought occurred to me about half way through the movie, and I was waiting for him to kick off for the rest of the movie.

In my opinion Liev Schreiber is unfortunately cast as a bad guy too often so when you see him at the start of a movie it becomes a bit obvious. It's a pity because he's a good actor and deserves less stereotypical roles. At the beginning I was hoping he would be an ambiguous character simply because it was apparent his character would turn out bad, not specifically because of the writing but because of the casting.

Btw, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Kudos goes to the director Phillip Noyce, who has a track record of excellent film making. I hope that Jolie does more like this and less of movies like Wanted, which was guff.

reply

Bone, I am in total agreement with you. Liev Schreiber is typecast almost as a bad guy. Every time I see him in a movie I know something is going to go wrong.

The last movie I saw him in was the 2004 remake of The Manchurian Candidate, and I was hoping he wouldn't turn out to be a villainous double agent. So Bonesnap, I agree with you on the quality of his acting. He deserves better.

I started having my doubts about him when he started shouting at her over dramatically as she was being escorted by the police. When the other man, the one trying to kill her prior to that changed his mind (because she spared his life) it became obvious. The *beep* that has a change of heart always turns out to be somewhat of "the good guy"... The man supporting her from the beginning is the evilest of evils. That's how spy movies work.

reply

It was completely obvious to me from the start.

I started having my doubts about him when Salt was going after the president. Since she was obviously the good guy, her only reason to go after Mr. Prez was to actually protect him.

'Scream 2' much?

St. Michael the Archangel

I personally had no idea. I should have known too because I followed the buzz and campaign right up til release, but I had no clue until he started shooting up the place. It was a surprise for me.

Can't wait to pick up this DVD next week.

reply

so what does he do thats so bad apart from shooting up some place? i cant be bothered to finish watching it.

reply

mah nothing, he just plans to nuclear bomb mecca and teheran. not a big deal

reply

He kills all of the other CIA agents in the room including a few women, beats up the President, and was going to kill him too. He also sets a bunch of nukes aimed at the Middle East (they were in the President's nuclear bunker because they feared an attack by the Russians) so that he could incite a holy terrorist war [when they started the whole nukes sub plot is when it got a little ridiculous for me]. But Salt came in and saved the day of course.

reply

They gave you enough hints during the movie for you to pick out Winter, even without knowing Liev's typecasting history. When the NATO sleeper goes kamikaze, he mentions there are more sleepers and they are everywhere in high places. Then when you see Salt mowing down everyone in the bunker area, you have to ask yourself, why is she going through all this effort to make it inside the bunker if you, the moviegoer, know she isn't going to assassinate the President? Inference = Winter is the mole

reply

<why is she going through all this effort to make it inside the bunker if you, the moviegoer, know she isn't going to assassinate the President?>

Because it was no telling where her allegiance truly was. The whole premise of the movie is this flip-flop between is she good, is she bad. I personally figured that by the end, she'd work out to be "good"...but to me, this was one of those movies where the filmmakers could easily choose to have it come out either way.

^^This. I was hoping she would end up a good guy but it really could've went either way.

I'm surprised the director let this movie out knowing it lacked suspense with Winter's character. Certainly others must have previewed it and let him know that the movie fell apart at the end.

reply

I had actually assumed that he was "Schneider," Salt's friend from childhood. I thought it was pretty predictable that he was a Russian because it was obvious he was in love with her and it was obvious that they'd have to kill off her husband so that she could have romantic tension with LS's character.

However, I was surprised that Evelyn did not know him and that he had played her for a patsy. I thought they had both known all along.

I didn't see it coming at all - you are not alone.

reply

Yes, wileywill203 (the thread starter) is so smart. He and he alone with his superior intellect foresaw the entire movie, twist and all. I for one am truly amazed. Give that man a pat on the back.

reply

I didn't really see it coming, but I wasn't surprised. I figured there was another mole down there, but didn't try to think through who it may be.

reply

i didn't see it coming. and tbh, i didn't really expect Winter to have a very significant role altogether, considering i didn't even pick up on his name until that final scene. i just sorta tuned him out...

They came out after Mission Immposible and said that Tom Cruise would never have been a spy because it takes a low key not "stand-outish featured face" an he was too pretty.

LS and the character did just that.
