This movie is crap

This movie does not deserve the rating it got on Rottentomatoes or on IMDB. The dialogue was dry and the plot was linear to the point of boredom. The guy who played Shaun was not convincingly gay either. All the other 'gay' movies that I've seen, of which include Brokeback Mountain, Get Real, and Beautiful Thing, were better than this film.

However, I can see why this movie would be lapped up by the mainstream crowd. It was formulaic and generic enough for the average gay Joe to enjoy which is surely why it is popular. The soundtrack also had me thinking that I was watching a bargain bin rom-com, I hear the same thing in every beachside California film.

To think that this film is groundbreaking in any way is insulting to films like Brokeback Mountain which actually contribute something new to the genre instead of the standard 'coming out' fluff.

Hmm I have to respectfully disagree. I think the dialog is effective and is meant to be "dry" at some points, as there moments where the characters' actions do the talking. Let's not also forget that it's set in present times, not in the 60s or the 1800s. People do talk like that.

It seems that your frame of reference is Brokeback Mountain, which I did not like and have always jokingly referred to as "The Gay Bridges of Madison County" as I keep comparing those two because of their fairly obvious similarities. I'm guessing you were perhaps hoping for a more theatrical dialog in "Shelter". I fail to see what BBM contributed to the (LBGT) genre other than capitalizing on the "shock value" of same sex scenes that mainstream audiences paid to see.

All in all, I'm not trying to convince you into thinking that "Shelter" is a good movie. I'm just trying to explain my point of view, and why I like this movie and why BBM did not impress me. I think you're free to believe what you believe and it's a pity you didn't enjoy it, I can imagine there are other movies that we can agree upon though.

I did like Shelter's soundtrack, and I think the fact that it's an unconventional take on same sex relationships makes it work on many levels. The soundtrack is also part of that effort to be outside the box. I believe that it can also be enjoyed by people outside the LGBT community and I've been recommending it to others ever since I first saw it.

To be honest because of watching this film (which has had an impact on me), It actually inspired me to watch more gay cinema movies, that have actually lead me to see some really good ones like the films you mentioned (especially Beautiful thing, my favorite one of all). I do agree there have been better films but in the end that is just your opinion, not a true statement and we all are entitled to our own opinions. This movie in my opinion was generally good. (I mean the sex scene was done a bit poor but everything else was played very well).

I thought the guy who played Shaun was convincingly gay because he was visiting alone (in a big house), he would always focus on Trevor, during the first night kiss scene Shaun just made his move so suddenly (that's what I've probably would've done)and as well whenever someone mentioned the word *beep* Shaun would just leave. It did convince me he was gay, while with Trevor he was discovering his homosexual side.

The only thing I got disappointed with was that in real life they aren't gay (of course, that's how it usually is with all the main actors in gay movies) which made me reflect back to the film and focus more on some parts they lacked of doing as gay characters because they were straight. Haha, but that's just because I fell in love with these actors. Overall I liked it and purchased it on DVD the day after watching it.

However as of January 2014, Shelter has a 58% rating on Rotten tomatoes (shockingly bad).

I didn't have a problem with the acting and I thought the chemistry between the leads was believable. But this was not a good film. Maybe if I was a teenager...

When I was in my teens and waiting for new Harry Potter books I read a bunch of slash fanfiction. This movie had all the characteristics of a piece of fanfiction. The main character is the conflicted original character, and Shane was a total Gary Stu. Nothing was missing: hostile family conditions, over-the-top horrible sister with a horrible boyfriend, the love interest that will forgive all and does everything for the main character (like the application sending process), the super adult kid main dude had to take care of that Gary Stu of course accepted perfectly (which 20-something guy, gay or straight, would accept that child so easily?) etc... This has a very good rating on IMDb standards so I guess I was waiting for something more. This movie simply was cinematographically and plot-wise extremely weak.
