Age difference.

Brad Rowe and Trevor Wright have in real life a 12 year age difference. It would make sense to me that the characters they portrayed would be intended to be around the same age as them, or close. In the film's commentary, the film's director says that Zach is 22. Supposing Zach and Shaun have also a 12 year age difference, that would've made Shaun 34. Which I think would make for a very interesting relationship in the long run, and for a really hot sex life, especially at that point in the characters' lives. In the end, the fact that Shaun was older I think made Zach appreciate some things that maybe he wouldn't have gotten from a younger guy, closer to his age. Zach had to live as a grownup even when he was very young so I think he was already very mature. The fact that Shaun was already a centered, mature man made Zach endear to him as maybe he felt understood by someone with a grownup/adult life as well. I think that also hooked Shaun, because though Zach was pretty much still a kid, he was as mature as probably someone Shaun's own age. But with a 22 year-old's swimmer's body XD!
Any thoughts?

That is a really good analysis.
