Why does he need to make extra money?

At the beginning of the movie he takes a job babysitting the singer because he needs the money. Why is he living so modestly? Even if he retired early to be near his kid sooner, you would think that working for the CIA would pay well enough to set money aside for retirement, not to mention bonuses and reward money for any criminals he brought in.

A CIA agent makes somewhere in the region of $30,000 to $60,000 in a year. The more clandestine positions at intelligence are voluntary and make little if any more than an analyst. The big bucks are in the higher levels such as directors.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time Del Boy, it's them that started me drinking!

He probably has hidden stashes of money and stuff, like most other covert operatives in fiction (possibly real-life as well). But he still needs a 'day job' to keep up appearances.

Also, I think it was implied that he wasn't being a bodyguard just for the money...it was something to do with his time.

That's true actually; it's Sam who mentions the money. Bryan only seems to consider the job when he realises he'll be minding a singer. At no point does he say 'yeah actually I could do with the extra cash'.

I didn’t think he took that job because he wanted money. He wanted to help his friends, who were legitimately kind to him; and when his friend told him how this singer is so popular, he thought he could ask about tips for his daughter
