Anyone else think this movie was Bollocks?

After a whole load of hype 4/5 star reviews great IMDB I went and saw this film and what a waste it was. Boring, looked low budget, rubbish story, uneventful and utterly dreadful. I was struggling to keep my eyes open after the first hour.

I have voted this a 2/10 on IMDB and I suggest those who agreed with me to vote low to make the score more accurate.

You're someone who thinks he is more intelligent than he is, which isn't to say you're not intelligent.

You have a relatively untarnished imdb history - except for Geordie Shore. Shame.

I plucked one post out of your history: American Psycho the novel. The fact that the novel was 40-50% exposition is why it is so readable and provides the backbone of the character. The very apartment scene you describe is literally the whole point of the novel: that it is exposition. Surely this is obvious? He spends pages describing music - something that can't be described. Bateman's life is pure exposition bogged down by detail that is insignificant, materialistic, but deemed so important to him and those around him. You clearly aren't mature enough to get it. Oh god, now I sound like you. At least it makes me sound intelligent; just not as intelligent as I actually am.

I love gangster movies and I really expected more from this. After watching it I felt empty, like I had just witnessed nothing special. Yes, it had realism to it, but I still didn't find it all that interesting.

My rating: A solid 5, possibly a 6.

I dont think it was meant to be epic. It was however meant to be documentary-like, and that it managed.
Neither do I think we were supposed to care about the characters either. They just wanted to show daily life.

I thought it was a very fascinating movie, that gave an insight of just how much the Camorra is in charge. It wasn't a typical Mafia-movie, which I liked.

I actually think its one of the best movies of the decade!

I agree it was bollocks. It was boring no drama nothing in the film that told me to watch it. The only interesting part was about the textile factory owner. The film had no drama and nearly no plot at all. Just a lot of random scenes.
I gave it 2 out of 10.

reply

There is no drama, no real character development, lot of random scenes but this isnt trying to tell story of mafia trough lifes of some individuals like for exeple in Goodfellas. This movie has random scenes describing lifes of people affiliated with mafia.

reply

Yes and that is what makes it bad.
I prefer films that have plot, that have charachter development and that are dramatic and donĀ“t have random scenes. An other problem I would like to point out is the lithning the film is too dark. This might work in the cinema but at home on TV were a film like this mostly will be seen is a visual disaster.
And it is not bad because it is a maffia film that is not like Goodfellas it would have been bad if it was about something completely different also.
Goodfellas is better because it have a plot. When I saw Goodfellas it was on TV late in the evening I had no plan watching it but I did and I still remember it this is why Goodfellas is good. If I in ten years still will think about Gomorra I will change my opinion on Gomorra but for now I will not.
Then I understand that other people like this film. People like different films just like people like different songs and there is no reason to judge others for liking or not liking a film and if someone want to see this film I would never tell him or her to not see it because I can't tell what someone else will like. And the impression of a film can also be decided by so many other circumstances like the mood you have when you watch it.

If I would recommend something about the Cammorra there is a French documentary I saw a few months ago that I really appreciated.

reply

I like movies with plot and all that too but this is a different type of movie. Goodfellas is better, but what this movie tries to do, I guess it does fairly good job at it.

reply

While I wouldn't agree with you that it was "bollocs", I also felt that this film didn't come up to my expectations. Especially after reading the book, which is so alluring and captivating, and gives one very emotional experience. Maybe so many stories from the book couldn't fit in the two hour's film, so making a series (and they are doing it) is certainly a good thing.

if you can actually answer your own questions, then i will believe you.
otherwise i rate this film as "10" out of 10.

please insight me with your opinion as specific as possible.
i am looking for your answers upon your words, "boring", "looked low budget", "rubbish story", "uneventful" and "dreadful".

my answers.

boring - killing people for no reason and making kids getting involved in a gang is boring? or watching the entire city itself is operated under a gang is boring?

looked low budget - because it is a low budget film. this is not a 200 million dollar Hollywood action movie.

rubbish story - this movie is telling you that the entire city (and everyone who lives there) is connected to a gang. and people can't live without them, because as much as they hate the gang, it is their source of their income and everything else. and as you can see, everybody is so connected so deeply. you can't pick one person to pull out, because they are sons, husbands, friends, parents of everybody.

uneventful - as mentioned above. each story shows you one event at least. and there are many mini stories in this movie. i think it has so many events that i can't remember them all.

dreadful - it should be dreadful. it is a story about a dreadful city with a gang.

reply

This movie clearly is eventful and contains a plot, several actually. In fact I think there are so many I can't remember all.
Tough of course it's uneventful if you expected true shoot-outs, killings and violence. Or if you have the attention span of a 5 year old.

It looks low-budget because it is. Tough that's not the case as to why they did it. It was meant to look like a documentary, and to look as authentic as possible. As the book it's based on.

I thought it gave a new fresh perspective on a genre that's been done to death. Mafia films aren't exactly intriguing any more. But this one was.

So I just saw the TV show and I was blown away, literally one of the greatest shows of all time.

This movie came out so long ago i didnt even remember posting on here haha, so many comments i never read lol

Anyway don't waste your time with this movie, watch the series it is sensational and that might be an understatement...

I did actually fall asleep, watching it. To be fair, I didn't have a lot of sleep the night before and I was very tired but about 30 minutes in, I suddenly thought "what the hell am I watching? This is going nowhere!!"

I went into this with absolutely no expectations or preconceptions, as I found it, looking through the foreign titles on Netflix. I would say I was completely unbiased and I really didn't like it at all. I may finish it to see if it does have any redeeming qualities.
