So the actor who played Taslima's father apparently murdered a woman for real.

Shelley Malil apparently stabbed his girlfriend 23 times and was jailed for it. Shocking. https://people.com/crime/40-year-old-virgin-actor-released-prison-after-stabbing-girlfriend-murder-attempt/

And in this movie, he seemed so nice and normal, who would've thought. Unsurprisingly, this was the last film the actor appeared in.

If this movie had been made in the last year, Taslima would've been recognized as a stunning and brave, empowered POC womxn who stood up to the oppressive Cishet White supremacist patriarchy, given a scholarship, photo ops & internships with trashbags like Ilan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, while also being nominated as CNN or MSNBC's 'Most promising up and coming menstruating person of the year' award.

reply

Maybe so, but this thread is much more about Mr Malil and the fact that in real life he murdered somebody than any scenes from this movie, controversial or otherwise.

Yeah sorry, wasn't trying to sideline your topic, just wanted to comment on the change in the political climate.

Can't believe he only got 8 years. Deserves a lot more / worse.

reply

Holy shit, I never heard about this. And he's free now?! Insane!

reply

Yeah, he was released in 2018, served about 8 years, you think its too little, how long should he have been jailed for?

reply

Life.

reply

Yeah, I've read that some people even in the legal system were perplexed that the sentence was only about 8 years for a brutal murder.

But seriously, I never would've guessed he would've been capable of carrying out this act in life like that. In the movie, he seemed like a nice and rational human being but I guess we all have dark sides and later someone acts on them and boom.
