Movie's got no OOMPH.

It's very dull, plodding and quiet. Most of the time the characters are all whispering to each other. There's the illusion of adventure and excitement, but there's never any energy in the scenes. The wall to wall CGI further compounds the problem. The humor when it shows up is the wrong sort, and shoe horned into the wrong moments, which destroys any sort of tension that accidentally managed to build. All that said, I still can't exactly pinpoint exactly what's wrong with this picture, what it's missing. But it's missing a lot. Rather uninspired is maybe the word. I'm not feeling any passion, in front or behind the lens.

Christoph waltz was in this ?

reply

Yep. I'm looking at him right now. He's the villain with the murderous prayer beads.

Is he scary

reply

Not really. He's basically playing a less interesting version of Belloq from 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'. They even do the bit where he shares a meal with the female lead who is hiding a knife. On paper, this could had been a nastier villain since Waltz is playing a fictional version of a real life person who was reportedly far more sadistic than what we see in this movie.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I can see why you might say that, but I fairly enjoyed it. The finale could've been better and you're right that there could've been a little more excitement overall, but the casting it superb, it's a great looking film, and it feels like a movie that we just don't see much of anymore -- a classic adventure story told in a traditional way.

You're right that there's a lot of CGI, but it's done well enough and there are also some very nice natural landscapes and convincing digital mattes.

Overall I'd give it a 6.5. It's not a great film but I think there are things to enjoy, and as I said, it feels like the kind of movie we just don't see much of anymore and I appreciate that about it.
