What did everyone think of the Final Episode?

I just finished watching the Finale' on DVD, and enjoyed it. I liked the ending scene with the camera panning out on the shot of them all together at the beach, it was a simply happy ending.

Nothing much changed - Gavin & Stacey still together as normal, Nessa & Smithy now getting along a bit better and caring for Neil... that's about it. Thought the wedding was called off, Nessa didn't end up with Smithy, there still just two parents putting up with each other - which isn't bad, it would of been a bit corny & obvious if suddenly they both ended up together.

It was a nice, sweet ending. What did everyone else think?

I liked the ending, but the bit in church where they are making fun of Four Weddings & A Funeral really cracked me up.

Laughed a lot at the John Prescott cameo.

He looks like what happens when you punch a cow!

I found myself crying at the wedding scene, especially when Dave said that he knew Nessa didn't love him. Soppy, I know, but the final episode was a wonderful mixture of sadness and joy and was, as always, very funny. I'll miss the characters. I think they've done the right thing by ending it sooner rather than later. So many shows go on for far too long. It's good to stop with viewers still wanting more.

I thought the story had to end with Stacey pregnant and Nessa and Smithy together, so some form of what you could call a cliche was inevitable.

But I thought the actual ending was as original as could be. Dave and Nessa don't marry because Smithy asks Nessa to be true to herself. The true cliche would have been to have had a go at Dave and 'competed' for Nessa for some unlikely reason.

Also, to end up in Barry as a four without any love between Nessa and Smithy, just a solid mutual understanding and acceptance of each other, was a lovely touch. The true cliche would have been Nessa and Smithy together.

And it was nice to end on that scene with just the four of them that started it all off. So yep, I was happy :-)

i loved it but me and my mate were confused, were we meant to believe that nessa and smithy were a couple now?

reply

No, there not a couple, there just closer now and doing what's best for the baby - pulling together.

We can only go on what we saw and I don't think it was meant to be ambiguous. They both seemed comfortable with each other's presence but that's a long way from being together.

I think tracee-garside has read it right: they're not a couple, they're just closer now and doing what's best for the baby - pulling together.

I agree, it never occurred to me that they weren't now a couple till I read the postings here. So it was well written in that you got to make your own mind up.

I liked the fact that it was just the four of them, in the same way that it was in the first episode. After introducing so many characters (most of whom were wonderful)it was nice to see them going full circle and ending as they started.

I expected someone to die and Gavin and Stacey to about Neil "the baby"

I thought it was perfect, I didn't find it cliche at all.
It was a great series finale.

I think they are just now friends that will keep on having sex whenever it takes there fancy, as they always have. Only difference being is that they now are closer as friends and parents because Dave is out of the equation.

I noticed that Nessa was laughing and smiling more in this short scene than she ever had before.

I will echo what almost everyone else has said up there. I was satisfied by the ending. Yeah, Stacey finally getting pregnant is a cliche, but I'm okay with that because it was written in an original way (37?? I can imagine her thinking "Okay, I've taken 36 tests, but let me just make sure and take one more"). Plus, I prefer that bright spot to a sullen dejected ending, or one where it's left hanging in the air. A cheerful ending suits the show well.

Well done with Smithy and Nessa, too. It would have felt cheap and forced if he had declared his love for her at such a premature point in what is obviously going to be a long, complicated and interesting relationship between the two. Despite their mutual repulsion, they have a strong chemistry and it's possible that they are either together in the final scene or will be later.

Lush.

Was funny but certainly a bit predictable
