On its own, it’s not that bad

Nothinf groundbreaking, but the 2011 version is actually an alright movie if viewed on its own. If the 82 flick had never existed, I’d say the 2011 flick would actually be an original, interesting film with some minor mishaps. The problem is that we have to compare to the infinitely better 82 film, and because it exists, we cannot ignore how awful The continuity is in this film, nor can we ingore the effects, characters, or directing, which all on their own would be okay, but suffer and burn because we have to compare it to the 82 version.

I thought the film was a perfectly solid 7/10 on its own & as a worthy companion piece to the 1982 film. I think fans just put the original on such a pedestal that the 2011 was bound to be judged hyper critically. I was actually someone who was skepticall about the American characters & female lead but I ultimately found neither to be an issue upon actually watching the film. I actually liked Mary Elizabeth Winstead's "Kate" as the lead & thought she did a good job.

I agree. The 1982 film is on a colossal pedestal and this film always had a major uphill battle. It never had a chance to be judged on it's own merits.

I do believe that if this film had practical effects akin the the 1982 version, that honestly it would be a roughly equal film. The super fast CGI 'Thing' is a bit jarring when you go from the 1982 version to this.

It has decent production values with respectable cinematography, a solid enough story which is similar to the 1982 one but has a few tricks up it's sleeve and good acting. It's a good film across the board.
