First off, all here who think that keeping your clothes on is NOT warmer is WRONG. Ofcoure a sweater or jacket wouldn't be any help, but keeping your t-shirt or shirt or any other "closest-to-the-body" clothing IS warmer because it creates an bit of a space between your body and the clothing. Your body heat will then warm up the water between the body and the shirt a bit. Not much, but noticable.
This ofcourse don't apply if you are only crossing a river or something, in wich case you naturally should do what Bear did, because you are going to need some warm and dry clothing when you get to the other shore, but if you are in a cituation where you have to stay afloat in freezing water, or swim in freezing water for a long time, it's best to keep your shirt on.
As for pants, get them off, it's just extra weight, but keep the "underoos" for the same reasons as above. =)

I think you may be confusing a t-shirt with a wet suit. Understandable mistake to make because they are both forms of clothing.

The difference is that one (the wet suit) is really handy to have if you are expecting to be in the water, whereas the other won't do anything to keep you warm in the water (the t-shirt).

reply

Acually, both help, where the wet-suit ofc helps alot more.

We had this explained and demonstrated while I was in the army here in northern Sweden. I can't explain nearly as good as my instructor, and even worse so in english, but the thing is, that if you are in water for a longer period, the t-shirt makes a little "barrier" against the cold water, and your body heat warms up the water between your body and the t-shirt.

Naturally this requires that the t-shirt is not an XXL size if you usally use a Medium or an Large. If the t-shirt is to big it will have no effect at all. The best effect is achivied if the distance between your body and clothing is about 1-2 cm (no idea how much that is in "american distance") while in the water.

Once again, forgive me if my english is horrible, I am not from an english speaking country :)

No need to apologize for your English. I've seen worse from people for whom it's their first (and only) language.

I cringe at the idiocy of the TC. Why would you keep your clothes ON when going in the water? What amount of warmth could they possibly add in ice cold water? In fact, they'll just cause him to be slower in the water.

Not to mention when he comes out of the water, wet clothes will only hurt him. He'll have to take them off anyway to dry off his body and waiting for wet clothes to dry off in the cold weather is not fun. By taking them off, he can dry off his body and then put on dry warm clothes to keep himself warm.

Learn common sense before making a stupid thread.

Probably to show people what they should do if they ever get caught in a similar situation? but that's just me.

reply

Uhm are you serious? He takes his clothes off to keep them dry!!! so when he comes out of the water, he can still warm himself, instead of having ice cold clothes. If he had his clothes soaked then he could basically run around naked too, it's a bad idea to have wet clothes in those situations, deadly bad.
