So the live action American adaptation has a director. Personally, I would've preferred a live action series on Netflix or HBO but I'll take what I can get. With that being said let's cast this thing...
Light - Freddie Highmore L - Dane DeHaan Soichiro Yagami - Gary Oldman Misa Amane - Amanda Seyfried or Juno Temple Ryuk - Michael C. Hall/Michael Shannon/Willem Dafoe (someone creepy)
Light and L were tough to narrow down. There's not that many young actors who could pull it off, being that they're high school age when the show starts. I think these two could actually be interchangeable.
I'm not casting Near or Mello because they're not in this movie lol. The rest of the task force can be fleshed out with good character actors.
Well considering the characters are japanese...those are terrible choices. The only one I'm not sure of his L but I'm assuming he is American since he uses an English letter to identify himself and he works with the FBI
They've already made a Japanese live action version of Death Note. This is the American version. No reason they couldn't cast Japanese but I see them going American. That being said, no need to tear down my choices if you don't have any of your own.
well just because America is making a version does not mean they should completely change the story. The whole aspect of this show is in takes place in Japan. The characters all act Japanese and use that culture, so if you make them all American, a lot of things these characters do wont make sense. One example is the honor that gets thrown around the room, Americans do not care much for honor, or at least Japan's version of it. I do not see a bunch of L.A. or New York cops deciding to go up against Kirra for justice, especially since Kirra is killing criminals, we admire that in America, hell most of are heroes are heroes for doing just that. Now I am not saying that Americans would ever say out loud they agree with Kirra, but I doubt any one would actually go up against him considering his power and the fact that he is only hurting criminals. But I do not think american cops would decide to go up against a guy who can just randomly kill you out of thin air. They even say in the show its the officers' duty that makes them stay. There are other reasons as well but this one sticks out more for me, and just because I do not know Japanese actors that would be good for the part doesnt mean that your American picks are automatically the best out there.
I definitely see where you are coming from. Making the characters American and changing the setting would definitely change elements of the story. But that is not necessarily a bad thing. They already made a live action version for Japan. There is no reason to make the same movie twice. If you want to see a live action Death Note that is like the anime, there is nothing stopping you from watching that version. Personally, I do want to see an American adaptation. I don't mind if they take liberties with the adaptation as long as we get a good movie. Source material doesn't always translate well to the big screen.
I also respectfully disagree with you that there are Americans who wouldn't stand up to Kira. Tell that to the first responders on 9/11 or people who volunteered to go overseas and fight. Me personally, I wouldn't go against Kira lol but I'm sure in a country of 300 million plus there would be a few. And if you don't buy that Americans would do so for honor, they could change it that so L offers a reward to anyone who will join his task force. I'm also not saying my picks are the best. Just throwing names out there to start a discussion. If a Japanese or Asian actor is best for the role, by all means cast them.
Really? 9/11? Ok, that is a completely different thing then what we are talking about. That was a terrorist attack where pretty much everyone involved was innocent. And the ensuing war, was Americans wanting to get revenge. This story has nothing to do with vengeance but justice. I am American by the way, and all I am saying is that within the whole Tokyo police department only like what, five people stayed? I havent watched it in awhile but it was close to that number. And again you say 300 million people? We are talking about a police department. They would not let random citizens come in on the investigation, nor would L. Now the money idea is good, then I could seen some bad ass action stars acting like mercenaries. But the team is mostly made up of investigators, but it would be a good aspect to keep in mind. I just do not see American audiences buying the fact that five cops stayed to track down a seemingly all powerful murderer in New York or LA, there would have to be like five Max Payne's or five John McClane's all in one department. It's just not plausible.
Just to be clear: You're actually saying that this story couldn't work because no audience would believe that five American detectives would want to do the right thing in a fictional story. You really have so little faith in Americans that if just a few were to act honorable in a fictional story, then it would make the story too unbelieveable and you wouldn't be able to enjoy it. Your view is so cynical that it's sad.
But thats the thing, in America that would not be honorable. Most Americans would be for Kira. Americans hate criminals and idolize vigilantes (superhero movies). I don't see five or so investigators going up against an ALL POWERFUL GOD who can kill them whenever he wants (so they think). So why would they do that when most people would agree with Kira. The only thing I could see, is that they prove somehow that Kira was responsible for and F.B.I. agent's death. Then they would see that no one is really safe and he would kill anyone that got in his way.
I actually thought Dane DeHaan would actually suit Light better. He is prefect as the smart ruthless guy. Dane is like the only real life person I can picture playing Light. Anyone else playing Light just feels awkward.
& Obviously if this is the case, this would be an American adaption, & I know all U weboos are gunna hate because of that. Keep in mind, "Edge of Tomorrow" with Tom Cruise was based off of a Japanese manga, "Live Die Repeat" & that turned out pretty good. So America doesnt always fck everything up.
There was already a live action Japanese adaption of Death Note & we all know how much that sucked. So if they ever decided to make another live Action Death Note movie, I say they give America a chance, or any other country outside of Japan or Asia.
There are 3 japanese live action movies (I only liked the first one, and didn't like it that much), there was a musical play and now a live action TV series is currently airing. I think that's enough with the live actions Death Notes. A Hollywood version of Death Note? I think it's too much already.
Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language IMDb = Catch-22
Light - Evan Peters, american horror story is pretty average but his acting is one of the only good things about the show, and sometimes, especially in the first season, his acting made me think of light.
L - Nicholas Hoult
Soichiro Yagami - Bryan Cranston / Gary Oldman
Misa - Margot Robbie - The way she was acting in the Batman Superman trailer reminded me a lot of Misa, if she just toned down the craziness a bit it would fit I think.
Watari - Michael Caine
Ryuk - William Dafoe / Micheal C Hall / Andy Serkis
