Drug Drug Sex Sex Drug. Over.

What a piece of self-important drivel. The oh so empty hedonistic lives of the rich blokes. Yawn. Hard to care about (or even follow, sometimes) anyone in this meandering snoozefest. No wonder it came and sank without a trace, but i do wonder who the heck gave this an overall rating of 7.2 as of today. People have issues.

Agree'd 100%. Where was the conflict in this movie? Climax? Anything? It's just Amber Heard and her lovely ta ta's. It was a complete disaster even with that star cast.

reply

I lived in LA and yes it was like that. As in the woman dying on the beach. Well it as in the end of era of wild sex and unlimited drugs is over and she wants the party to continue.

This movie had no plot it was just about what these people felt and what was going on in their lives. Rich and poor people alike lived completely empty lives. Poor people wanted to be rich and rich found no satisfaction from their money, sex, power or drugs. Life has no purpose only emptiness and artificial problems. Movie is boring true but that just supports its meaning.

Amber Heard naked every 10 minutes isn't enough to lift this thing up.
Respectfully disagree.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

I thought it was beter than I had heard, even bad Ellis has to be watchable at worst. Unlike American Psycho and Less Than Zero though, this one doesn't have anything to make it cool repeat viewing. It's not over the top enough like Psycho and it doesn't have a Robert Downey or James Spader to anchor it, like Zero. I did get something of a Bateman vibe from Graham, but he was a pretty weak character. The plot with Rourke/Renfro should have been in another movie entirely and they should have bulked up the other characters instead. So perhaps it could have benefitted from more crazy drugs and more wild sex, if nothing else.

I agree this film isn't for everyone, and those looking for a narrative will not find one (or at least ONE CLEAR cohesive narrative)
This film is more like an exercise in voyeurism than anything else, looking in on snippets of the lives of others, and any pleasure to be taken from it is purely a guilty one. Maybe there's something to be said for the portrayal of its characters in that, I'm not sure.
I did enjoy it but I doubt I'll watch it again, there's no repeat value like American Psycho and I think thats down to the fact there is no character development or distinct story.

I had really high hopes for this film because it was diving back into the crazy drug, sex, pop filled 80's scene and this absolutely nailed the visuals and mood, music and authenticity.. but that was all. I really did enjoy the visuals and use of music mainly because it just worked.. If only there was a well developed story this could have been an amazing movie.. the vision was there, just not the execution and direction. I will be re-watching it again soon and just wanted to say that Brad Renfro's death is a damn tragedy, the guy was so talented and young.
