How come Claire doesn't have a washing machine at home?

Just out of curiosity, is it normal for a bank manager with a bank manager salary in Boston to not have your own washing machine at home? This is my first time watching the movie, and I really liked it, but i feel they could have met in a more realistic place.

You go to a public laundromat so you don't have to get your home washer dirty.

Did she have a home, or did she live in apartment? If the latter, she couldn’t have a washing machine
