Blake Livelys point?

Can someone please explain Blake Livelys role in the plot? I got the romantic tension and her leading the FBI to Doug, but was there anything else?

Maybe as a symbol to show that Doug remaining in Boston would be tragic for him. He gets involved with this other girl Claire who seems to have a more freeing element to her - like she is doing what Doug could be doing (living a stable life), but just elsewhere. And Claire also seems to have less of that very local Boston feel to her like Krista does (in terms of accent, etc.). Doug is trying to break from his past, and this girl is sort of one aspect that he needs to shed, even as she clings to him and asks to follow him, interestingly, pleading with him that "Why can't I change, too?" But no, he wants to make a clean break.

It sort of seems to me, however, that Doug is too dependent on Claire to help him change his life around. If one really and truly wants to change his/her life around, he or she must do it on their own, first, and not depend so heavily on other people who aren't part of his or her family. Having said that, it's possible that at some level, Doug realized this, which was part of the reason that he skipped town for Florida, without Claire, let alone Krista, if one gets the drift.
