Was it just me or did the last 20 minutes of this go ridiculous

I know the film is based on a ridiculous plot, but the first 3/4 of the film sets up the characters and the storyline, and in that world for those 3/4 its consistent and makes sense.

The everything around the Catalina wine mixer was just stupid. The dad, who had been a voice of reason and normality throughout the movie started going stupid, swearing loudly, talking about the t-rex and what not, the brother who was vice president of a major company was yelling someone has a mangina and their most important function, and the therapist who had always been normal went silly. I laughed alot for the first 3/4 but the ending ruined the film for me.

Really? The last 20 minutes ruined it for you?

The ending actually made me love the movie. Before I thought it was funny but not great, and now I think this is my favorite Ferrell/McKay collaboration.

My favourite part of the ending was that they didn't have Dale and Brennan revert back to being just complete morons. At the end they were still mature adults with a successful business but also realized there is nothing wrong with being themselves.

I think it was them simply ending there childhood and teen years especially after they beat the crap out of those kids at there school they're going to go back to the mature adults they became in the movie.

That's what the ending told me.

the ending was a disappointment in what was otherwise a hilarious film, im going to watch this over and over.

The climax at the F-cking Catalina Wine Mixer was filled with many moments of greatness. The fantasies/realizations of various characters alone was worth it.

I have to stick around for the end. brennan sings- por ti volare. I've seen plenty of movies that get unwatchable towards the end. this wasn't 1 of them imo.

I just watched this movie and I feel the same way. I get that the stepbrothers mature and that Dr. Doback feels bad that they aren't being themselves. That said, I feel like the ending is rushed, that they ran out of funny lines, and that the ending just doesn't have the energy of the first 3/4 of the film. Honestly, as soon as the "Boats and Hos" presentation is over, the film loses a lot of its spark.

As you stated the whole movie is ridiculous and the Catalina Wine Mixer continued the same ridiculousness. If I were to try to make sense of it, it's the buried feelings of the protagonists coming to the surface. Mr. Doback is just like you say, the voice of reason, always playing it safe, he finally busts out and says what the eff, make your move. The brother was a Type A jackoff the whole time and I thought the mangina thing just carried that on, don't see any change there. The therapist, same thing, she's gone out of her way to keep a professional distance from Brennan but her hormones are taking over and it's starting to show.

The thing that bugged me about the ending was how quickly Brennan and Dale became adults. Dale starts working a temp job and all of a sudden is catering at a big event and Brennan - even more amazingly - is able to pull the Catalina Wine Mixer together despite showing no real motivation previously.

I know its 'just' a comedy and there had to be a way to bring the ex-step brothers together at the end, but it seemed to stretch credibility a little.
