This vs Us? This one was a doozy

Haven't gotten the chance to see US yet but this movie, oh boy, it was a downer. A totally avoidable situation but the father still did it anyway to keep the story going even after all those warnings. Like seeing a warning sign on a mountain saying don't cross the line, danger ahead but they still do it anyway and then boom, Darwinism took over. So, is Us any better? I hear it was original horror.

I’ve seen both and they’re both quite enjoyable. I think Pet Sematary is the scarier of the two films. But they are both quite different forms of horror. Personally I think Us was better from start to finish. If all of Pet Sematary was as good as the final third, then I’d say Pet Sematary for sure

What parts particularly scared you in each film? I guess I watch too many horror films that I have become immune if not desensitized to them, mostly. Some jump scares do sometimes manage to surprise me from time to time or if they do the creepiness really well. Pet sadly didn't do it for me. :/

I agree with the previous poster, this movie was scary and disturbing. Us is very very good and I highly recommend you see it. It's a different kind of scary and very tense.

reply

Us was great but felt more like a thriller with mystery and some horror. The real horror isn't really revealed until the end of the movie, up until then it's basically the family surviving against their doppelgangers but it's rather tense.

I hadn't seen the original Pet Semetary or read the book and I saw this tonight and it made me feel uncomfortable and uneasy watching it as it was creepy as all hell. I hadn't even seen a trailer so I knew nothing of the story which turned out to be very dark, bleak and twisted. The atmosphere was built up really well with a few great jump scares as well.

So for me personally for pure horror Pet Semetary is the better film, but if you've seen the original film or read the book then it probably won't shock or disturb you as much as it did me who knew nothing about the story other than a cat is brought back to life. Both movies are very memorable though with some creepy nightmare fuel, atmosphere and great performances.

You should read the book. Neither movie compares to it. I had to stop halfway thru it and take a break. It is that intense.

reply

Yeah I was thinking about reading the book and The Shining as well as I’ve heard they’re King’s most horrifying novels.

reply

Honestly, I don't understand the hype with The Shining. I read it and enjoyed it but I didn't find it scary or horrifying at all. I was more frightened by Dean Koontz' Watchers. Now that novel, Phantoms and The Taking are really scary and intense.

US is terrible

reply

yep, it has 94% on RT how, critics clearly have no agendas?

My ratings:
Us is an 8/10
Pet Semetary is a 7/10

I liked both, but I do think Us is better.

"A totally avoidable situation but the father still did it anyway to keep the story going even after all those warnings."

Not sure I agree with that. The father had no knowledge of what he was doing when Jud told him to bury the cat. The next time the father went was to bring his daughter back which you can chalk up to temporary insanity. After that it was the daughter that brought the mother back and then they both brought him back.

They also mention how the burial ground beckons to you after you've used it once. What doesn't make sense is - first - why would Jud even show it to the father and - second - why would Jud make the father bury the cat himself when Jud is already tainted by the burial ground. Seems like a sinister move on Jud's part.
