Great acting, crappy writing. ** spoilers ***

I understand logic has to be checked at the door while watching fiction but while watching this show, you have to check your logic and drop about 50 IQ points. Maybe they do things a bit differently in Denmark but here are some of the things I learned while watching The Killing.

- Accuse anyone and everyone without evidence so the show can move on to the next episode.
- If you're accused of murder, do everything in your power to look like a suspect and be sure to hide your alibi at all cost.
- If you're innocent, lie to the police.
- If you're a witness, lie to the police.
- If you have nothing to do with the case, lie to the police.
- Smoke like cigarettes are going to be outlawed tomorrow.
- If you are the police and a suspect cuts you, don't shoot him but try to talk to him.
- When transporting a prisoner, be sure not to cuff her so she can take your gun.
- In fact, don't cuff anyone.
- No one sleeps.
- Danish police is more incompetent than the Afghan police.
- Forensics is only important if it moves the story to the next episode, otherwise, it is to be ignored.

Actually, police in my country (Europe) also won't cuff people who are only arrested. Also they won't shoot anyone as this will count as murder, except under extreme circumstances.

reply

I can understand that part as I know the gun culture is very different in Europe so my disbelief was not as severe when she went chasing suspects unarmed. But letting a prisoner reach over and take your gun while transporting is stretching the imagination.

Overall, I still enjoyed the series but the constant convenient redirection in suspects was testing my patience. Even in the end, I'm not sure the murder is solved as they seem to leave the room open for Troels as the rapist. He seemed to try to confess by phone in the end and was surprised the suspect was killed. I thought they would continue the story line in II but I'm 2 episodes into II and it's completely different. I thought the recording of the emergency call in the last episode was Troels calling about his wife. His dead wife's name is also Anna as seen on her tombstone.

reply

Troels was about to tell the police about his campaign managager's cover up at the end. It would have been political suicide, that's why he was upset.

reply

People are rarely cuffed in Japan as well, and when they are, it is typically in front and not behind and often the cuffs are covered with a blanket or jacket so as not to be visible to the press.

reply

Dead on and hilarious.

I really liked the show. Sometimes i thought it was moving kind of slow, but otherwise it was very well written, and fuldl of suspence. One thing that I dimpldn't like was the ending was kind of simpe and too easy.

thanks you answered me question, I'll be better entertained rewatching The Wire

"Danish police is more incompetent than the Afghan police."

Only on TV. In real life they are very good. 96% of all homicides are solved in Denmark. Compare that to 65% in the US. And on the extreme end in Detroit, Michigan only 21% of homicides are solved.

There are 120 cases of unsolved murders in Denmark since 1946. The US has 185.000 unsolved murders since 1980.

That's a good one. Are you from Afghanistan originally?

Very amusing! Having just watched all of S1, I have to agree with most of this (not sure about Danish vs Afghan police!).

reply

Just finished watching S1 last night and I agree with most of your points. Maybe slightly unfair to criticize the show on those terms though - I don't think they were aiming for realism on par with shows like, say, The Wire. I thought it was a fun trashy show, and certainly a superior trashy show.
