This took place in the 60's?

I saw the trailer and it looked like it took place in the 60's or maybe 50's. When I read the book, I didn't come across anything that gave away the fact that it was supposed to take place then. Did I miss anything?

reply

I don't really remember the book saying the year it was set it. And I just looked cause I still have the book.

reply

The book doesn't mention a specific date.

Reiner said the book had a feel attuned to a more innocent generation, so he decided to set it in the 50s. (source below)

Van Draanen said (somewhere. i can't find the link right now) she wrote the book thinking in today's terms, but that the time change was not the important part of the story (ie not a deal breaker).

It doesn't really matter much to me. I agree with the author that the era won't change much of the story (aka be a dealbreaker), I would prefer it to be in the 2000's or 1990's but who knows, maybe the 60s or 50s will produce a nice feel as well.

In the book Juli's brothers were making a CD, they didn't have those in the 50s

reply

Actually i do remember Julie singing, "My Girl" by the Temptations in the book so I guess they got the idea that the movie should be set in the 1960's.

The scene of her singing this song takes place where Bryce watches her feed her chickens. Hahah, I would know this because I've read the book a gazillion times.

reply

Omggg same here! I did not realize the story took place in another period!

reply

Why, oh, why did they set it in the 60's? It gives it a different feeling..one that I don't like! When I read it, I thought it was present day, the Now! No one will want to go see it, especially kids nowadays..it'll be too slow!

update: I looked at the trailer a second time and I overreacted which isn't new! haha! It looks better another go around! And I want to go see it..I can't change the fact that it takes place way before I was put on Earth!

I was confused too, I remember reading the book way back when and I don't recall it taking place at any specific time.

Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about *beep* in order to be comfortable?

reply

Julie sang "My Girl" by the Temptations in one scene in the book. Hence the time
setting.

reply

im 19, one of my fave films is stand by me. if this wasnt set in the 50's/60's it wouldnt appeal to me as much. this is the perfect time setting.

reply

They set it in that time period because the director wanted it to be more innocent. Like nowadays you can text and such. I think it's a great idea! :)

reply

I don't like that they change the time setting. (its going to take place in the 50's) and in the book it takes place in present day or even the 90's. As long as it doesn't change the story that much i will be okay with it though.

More like the end of blissful ignorance, delusions and the beginning of reality. You could no longer ignore all the problems because they exploded all at once. The reason we are so screwed today is because of these past generations bs.Baby boomer *beep* worst generation.

Ohey, Captain McAngry. Funny seeing you here. And slightly irritating.

There was the brat pack. Surely movies that were made in the eightys work well enough? The reason they do movies in the '50s and '60s, is they feel that enough time has passed for them to feel detatched enough to portray correctly. That their emotions don't color the film.

Life on Mars/ Ashes to Ashes were set in 1973, and 1981 respectively, but those are television shows.

reply

I'm pretty sure there are plenty of movies that take place in the 80s.

reply

A few of the songs used in the movie "Flipped" were released in the late 1950's and the early 1960's years as follows.

The songs "Da Doo Ron Ron" by The Crystals and "He's So Fine" by the Chiffons were from 1963. "Pretty Little Angle Eyes" by Curtis Lee was from 1961.
"A Teenager in Love" by Dion and the Belmonts was from 1959.

reply

I don't like how the time period changed. I think it takes a lot away from the story because of how different boys and girls act now and how they acted then. It just doesnt feel right to me. :/

reply

When I read the book I imagined it being more in the past for some reason, so it doesn't really bother me xD

I probably thought it took place back then because of the way Bryce talks when he's mad. I mean, it just seemed like he was using an older type of language or something :O Oh, and the basket boy thing seemed kinda old fashioned hahaha

I don't think the relationship between guys and girls has changed THAT much, so hopefully you'll still like it! :D

reply

Well yeah I havent read the book in years but from what I can remember, Bryce describes the basket boy thing as a really old tradition that they should have gotten rid of years ago. That's what makes the basket boy thing funny in the book. It was okay in the 60's, now not really.

Plus, you simply can't pull off innocence and total lack of sexuality in 2010, kids are WAY more mature at 14 than we were back then.

The times they are a changin'...

reply

I don't see how any one could be confused about the time period. Look at the clothes, the songs, the hair do's. How about the kids riding bikes to school. Old bikes with balloon tires not $300 racing bikes and helmets. If that wasn't enough when they had the auction it was for the "basket boys of 1963."

I prefer that the movie was set during that time period. If you don't like it go watch "Cruel Intentions V" or "Spy Kids VI" some other modern crap.

reply

Personally, i love the fact that it was set in an earlier time period than today. I remember hearing Rob Reiner say he wanted to have it set in a time when electronics couldn't get in the way. In the book, you can imagine the story in any time period you'd like. For the movie, 50s and 60s seemed to work perfectly.

reply

Rob Reiner said he wanted it to be set during the time he was the age of the characters.
