You are wrong about this.
Upon my recent rewatch they landed during a rainstorm. Theres even a loud crack of thunder after the plane landed. The soldiers advanced right as the landing door opened and they expected to see zombies. Gerry says to the virologist "Keep your finger off the trigger till you need it" and they proceeded cautiously off the plane. And zombies ran up to their plane. The storm "clouded" (ha) the noise from there engines somewhat, yet nearby zombies still heard the louder sound and ran toward the base. No one said "shhh be quiet" and no one tip-toed. Gerry and the virologist moved with caution out of fear. The soldiers standing with them matched there movement to protect them, and the soldiers who advanced ahead of them did so quickly. They actually did the scene well and used the rainstorm as a scary backdrop and as a smart way to show the audience a good reason why the landing was not overwhelmed by zombies immediately.
