This film is addicting in its own way...

Anyone else find it that way?

I watched it back to back in one day and it was lovely. Just... it's so therapeutic and has this beauty to it that really seems sort of healing.

That's a lovely thing to say, and in its way, indicative of the poetry of Keats.

On leaving some Friends at an Early Hour

GIVE me a golden pen, and let me lean
On heap’d up flowers, in regions clear, and far;
Bring me a tablet whiter than a star,
Or hand of hymning angel, when ’tis seen
The silver strings of heavenly harp atween:
And let there glide by many a pearly car,
Pink robes, and wavy hair, and diamond jar,
And half discovered wings, and glances keen.
The while let music wander round my ears,
And as it reaches each delicious ending,
Let me write down a line of glorious tone,
And full of many wonders of the spheres:
For what a height my spirit is contending!
’Tis not content so soon to be alone.

I think it's one of the most sensual films I've seen. It has a dreamy quality about it.
I like your description of it!

I didn't find it instantly attractive - it seemed awkward and forced, full of introductions and scene setting, and my low attention-span-for-this-kind-of-thing daughter gave in after 15 minutes. I'm glad I persevered: it did draw me in, and the dreamlike mood suited it perfectly.

reply

I did! I've seen it seven times.

I watched it at a friends house, and instantly wanted to watch it again. It is such a beautiful film.

I know what you mean. It's kind of INTOXICATING (is that the right spelling). It's the kind of film that you get lost in. It's so delicate and tender and dream like.

reply

Haha I just finished watching it again - I'm kinda irritated if people talk when the movie plays so I usually watch it alone. I am selfish cos I wanna enjoy it thoroughly.

Its just beautiful and am in bliss being addicted to it.

It's a beautiful poem, just like the man and his poetry. Read his poetry, his letters, the biographies . . . Keats himself is every bit as addicting as this lovely film -- every bit and so much more so . . .

"A thing of beauty is a joy forever:
Its loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health, and quiet breathing.
Therefore, on every morrow we are wreathing
A flowery band to bind us to the earth, . . . "

John Keats
from Endymion, 1817

There's something utterly intoxicating about this film. It's hard not to get lost in the vibrancy of the colors and the performance of the actors. I've seen this film four times now, and each time I've been able to pick up on little nuances that I hadn't noticed before. It's a fun film to watch if you just want to get lost in the beauty of history and literature for a little while.

Campion succeeded in translating the sense of enchantment exuded out of La belle Dame sans Merci into the very fabric of this film.

The weekend I bought the DVD I watched it 3 times. For me the romance was believable and the poetry excellent placed within the story. If you are in the US and have Starz! movie channel it is now playing on the On Demand channel so you can watch over and over again.

I've been sick lately, and when I'm ill and feel like doing nothing, I generally watch films. I set my sights on Bright Star a few months ago and misplaced it for reasons unknown. When I found the DVD I flipped it in and was just blown away by the splendor of it all. It really has been the best medicine. It's a gorgeous film.
