lee's 'lust, caution' vs. verhoeven's 'black book'

it's pretty much impossible to get a true measurement of opinions on this, but i'll give it a go

(if i post the question on this board, everyone will vote for "lust, caution" & if i post it on the "black book" board, everyone will vote for that one)

anyway...

ang lee's 'lust, caution' or paul verhoeven's 'black book'

which of the 2 films do you prefer & why?

I liked both movies but IMO "Lust, Caution" wins by a nose.

Both movies excels on several departments: Art Direction, Cinematography (Although Rodrigo Prieto's work on "Lust, Caution" is superior), Make-up, Set-Design, Score, Costume, etc.
Both filmmakers are revered around the world but they have a very different approach to movies. Verhoeven favours the message of his films over the character development, unlike Ang Lee who does the opposite.
That's why "Lust, Caution" being based on a work of fiction feels more realistic than "Black Book" that actually it's based on a true story.

None of them represents their best work. Neither for Ang Lee nor for Paul Verhoeven. However the superior cinematography, slightly better performances by the leading actors, added to the fact that Ang Lee develops better the main characters... IMO are reasons enough to consider "Lust, Caution" a better film if only minutely.
Albeit I am sure many people will find "Black Book" more entertaining. Besides, Carice van Houten's uber-hotness might be the winning card for "Black Book" fans, and honestly I can't blame them!

Lust Caution 8+
Black Book 8-

Stylistically and technically speaking Lust Caution is far superior to Black Book. Speaking of style, Lust Caution renders a more modern way of film making and employs the latest film making style. Black Book is outdated in the stylistic sense, the cinemarography and the editing as a whole is ten years behind. But I prefer Black Book as whole even though I found the nude scenes laughable and unecessary. In Lust Caution-we don't really understand the characters on why they do certain things and that makes the movie pointless. In Black Book, we come to know and understand why the characters do whatever it is they're doing.

drat. I wanted to be the one to start this thread. I'm too late by a whole year.

I watched these films very close together by complete coincidence: my bro lent me LC and I found BB at the library shortly after. I was immediately struck by the similarities.

I liked Black Book a little better. LC felt a little incomplete to me. It's ending didn't feel right to me. I feel that films with bleak, unhappy endings have a trickier time making it feel like a complete story that is worth watching. BB certainly functions more as a rip-roaring thriller than LC.

I feel like I'm babbling pointlessly. I'm going to go get some icecream sandwiches.

Very different movies, but both are my favorites in their respective years. I really don't think I could chose which one is my favorite.
