Where was the comedy part in this movie?

So I watched this movie yesterday expecting a "breath of fresh air" kind of movie, and one of the top "10 movies of the year" and a "heartwarming comedy"

After sitting and watching for 2 hours, I felt cheated in the end. Where was the comedy? where was the originality? Did all the other movies of 2007 suck so much, that this had to be a top 10?

Even if I had gone with with zero expectations, I would've found the movie boring at least. If you're a screenwriter/ producer and are asking the viewer to give you 2 hours of their lives, you better make it interesting and worth while.

These are the two things that bother me: Where was the comedy and why take 2 hours of my day with a delusional character and his doll friend to tell me that he should be accepted?

well, it wasn't a movie were I laughed my ass off, but there were a few scenes that made me laugh. Just the way Bianca sits for the first time in this church, holding this book and stuff made me laugh, because it was so unreal.
Also I had to laugh about her origin, half Brazilian, half Danish, now that's some mix!

In the end the movie was really heartwarming, but it wasn't too funny. It's a tragic comedy after all. The movie had two goals to fulfill, on the one hand have something rather disgusting as a sex doll becoming an active and to some points even beloved member of the community and taking away the fear of it, and on the other hand the warm support of Lars' friends. For example the scene, where Lars comes together with some of his brother's work buddies and one states "Lars? Your girlfriend? A total babe!" was amazing. The statement felt honest to him and there was no hint of mocking him. This statement coming from a simple retail dude to another man who dates a sex doll was in some ways moving.

My rule on comedy is it can't really be explained. Either you do or you don't find it funny. The best comedy for me is that which is subtle, and that is the case with this movie.
I understand others, like the OP don't consider the same things funny that I do.
It doesn't mean he doesn't get it, or he's not sophisticated etc.
We all have different funny bones based on our own unique life experiences.

The comedic element is subjective, so I can appreciate how some people might not *get* it.

I personally found it really funny in parts...but it was never supposed to be a straight comedy. It is far cleverer than this.

What I cannot appreciate is how you could question it's originality? I mean afaik, there isn't another movie that is remotely similar to this......

It might not be everyones cup of tea, but that you failed to see it's merits is more your failing than the movies, sorry.
