I'll believe that the whole town tolerated Lars. I'll believe that Lars could get away with calling an ambulance for a plastic doll. What I WON'T believe is that Margo (Kelli Garner's character) wasn't gettin' any. Even with the frumpy clothes you could see that she's built like a brick **** house. Only in the movies are girls like that waiting around for good old Lars to come to his senses. Are you with me on this one guys?
Here is a lesson to be learned. There ARE women and girls in North America who have beautiful faces, nice bodies, and genuinely warm hearts and spirits. So many men believe that if you want a gorgeous girl, you have to tolerate an awful personality, and if you want a girl who is marraige material, you have to settle for someone average. There are many women who possess that ideal combination of physical, social, and emotional attributes, and they are not stuck on themselves. Young men should not be so quick to make the assumption that hot girls only want buff dudes with a pretty car. Many of those women will avoid guys like that because they want someone who will be more loyal to them.
With regards to this movie, it is important to remember that these folks were in Northern Ontario. That is the same as living in Central Wyoming or Central Nevada. There are people there, but there just aren't that many people there. Margo knew that her choices were limited. In the office scene, she said that she was lonely. Perhaps she felt that of all of her choices, Lars was the best match for her. It also may help to go a bit deeper into the character's backgrounds. The movie doesn't mention this, but Margo and Lars may have grown up together. She may have felt this connection to Lars that most of us don't ever feel to other people because we grow up in big cities like Toronto or New York where it is so easy to just walk away from someone and find another person. If we lived in small, remote areas, we may feel differently.
My point is that Margo's devotion to Lars is a bit of a stretch in our modern world, but it is not completely impossible.
Margo liked lars before he went totally nuts becuase he was a really nice sweet guy. Plus I got the feeling that her other boyfriend might have just wanted to have sex, he seemed to be all over her at the office party (tickle fight) maybe she left him because she wasn't that into sex herself and basically a child (hey she has stuffed teddy bear at her desk) lars is basically sexless himself (he doesnt have sex with his SEX DOLL!!!) so they can get together and not have sex.
I agree with you wrote about small towns. This was filmed in northern Ontario, but the movie is set in northern Wisconsin. All the vehicles have Wisconsin plates, and Lars has a service map of Wisconsin tacked up in his cubicle.
Well under all those layers of ugly, tattered clothes Lars was "built like a brick **** house" too. If you're only basing it on looks I'd say Lars was out of Margot's league.
hahhaha... yea I would reluctantly have to agree w/ u on both subjects. I love this movie, but the ambulance part was pretty unrealistic. Also, this is the first movie I think I've ever seen Kelli Garner in and as you said even w/ the the frumpy attire, I was thinking to myself..."she's still pretty hot." Then after having seen her pics here on IMDb, my opinion was solidified.
Beautiful movie but the most unbelievable part was how the town supported Lars. There is no town in America that would give that kind of support to an individual. Most ppl would treat him with ridicule, fear and scorne.
But that is what makes it so great. People coming together to help out one of their own. Accepting him for all his flaws, genuinely caring about him and helping him get through a tough time in his life. This movie should be able to inspire everyone to accept others for who they are, instead trying to change them by ridiculing and picking them apart.
I saw werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand, walking through the streets of Soho in the rain.
