Episode 5 - Upon Awakening

SPOILERS

I was looking forward to this episode because of Gail Nordic's return and the looming showdown on Terminus between the Empire's forces and the Anacreons and the possibility of some advancements in the story. But apart from the simple facts of those two things happening the episode was otherwise uneventful.

The first 20 minutes were given over to Gail Nordic's back story and how she came to rebel against her strict religious upbringing. But this was all redundant information because we already knew that. And worse the twenty minutes added nothing new to her story so it was pointless.

The rest of Gail's time in the present was spent trying to get information from the AI running her rescue station and proving again that she's quite the smarty pants. And of course we already knew that too.

Meanwhile on Terminus the tense stand off between the Anacreons and the Termites continued. The Anacreons turned off the barrier and stormed the settlement amid a hail of blaster fire without actually seeming to hurt anyone.

The Empire battle ship Commander decided it would be a good idea to hover a thousand metres above the settlement and read the riot act to the Anacreons which gave them plenty of time to take aim and fire a missile at his ship. Oops-a-daisy ! The tactical equivalent of Daenerys blindly flying her dragon into range of a scorpion cross bow.

The other notable thing about this episode was that the Emperors and Demerzel didn't appear in it. And the absence of the most interesting characters and the best actors on the show left the episode underpowered in terms of how interesting it was, or in this case wasn't.

There used to be an old saying about sport " bad kicking is bad football ". Stating the obvious but no less true for that. You might also say " bad writing is bad television " and that is also true with regard to this show.

Who the hell is Gail Nordick? You mean Gaal Dornick?

I don't get why the Empire only sent one ship and not a couple considering they lost a communications relay buoy or why Salvor Hardin didn't warn the Empire ship of a cloak weapon first. Sucked so much see such a beauty of a ship just crumble with 1 shot. Guess shield tech or armor isn't really a thing with this sci-fi. Really loving how the hyperdrives work in this series though with energy sand-like particles from pre-jump and exit.

100%.... I am glad i don't pay a nickel to watch this show. I skipped over the boring back story in this episode.

I skip most backstories in TV shows these days, it's always a dumb past event used to justify an obvious present day decision and/or build a quick emotional connection with audience before they kill someone off.

the flash back is just a gimmick used by shows these days to extend a paper thin story. people watch those shows for the exciting present events, not the flashbacks. the only show that had legitimate flashbacks was breaking bad.

I liked this episode a bit more but I agree it was 50% backstory we didn't need. Especially the space walk. Could have saved the budget by just letting her look out a damn window.

i literally came in here looking for this when i watched it. it annoys me to no fucking end. they should've thought hard for a good reason to make the ship enter artillery range. after all, they're writers right? how are they so stupid and lazy?

Episode 5 is the worst so far in my opinion.

You forgot that Kraaal Fnudschik also manually calculated her ships destination like a 119 year old veteran space navigator via "simple optical navigation" by perfectly identifying quasars and using angular distances between some space objects named in the thousand range as well as at least 5 cones with various different half angles.

Well... here I knew shit gets real when you grow up on a religious water world praying to a sleeping god. Maybe she got kissed by Cthulhu himself.
