Death Sentence or Taken?
in my opinion, 'death senetence' does it for me. better acting, better plot, better villians and above all better action sequences. not saying taken is a bad film, but i think DS is better.

shareDeath Sentence ALL THE WAY. Taken was crap, IMO.
shareTaken of course. Death Sentence is garbage - acting, plot, cheesy dialogs, laughable (especially gang members) characters and their unbelievable actions, absurdity and stupidity every 5 minutes, at moments too melodramatic at moments too brutal but none of those executed well. OMG what a terrible movie. And this 6.8 rating?! Really?! I suppose many of those who enjoyed it so much are also dedicated gamers and movie like this was like dream comes true (Max Payne I suppose has a lot of similarities or...)
Positive thing......hmmmm.... it doesn't look so bad, couple of nice shots but nothing special. If it didn't take itself too serious and embraced its over the top, cheesy nature it could have been much better, goofy take on revenge flicks.

Death Sentence was far more superior. Death Sentence is just about a mild mannered man seeking revenge on the criminal who killed his son. Doesn't even own a gun. Taken, the main character is an ex CIA agent. So Liam Neeson knew all he needed to to catch and kill the bad guys. While Kevin Bacon had not a clue, which is more realistic. I mean how many of us are CIA agents. Plus Death Sentence focused alot more on the emotional effects of loosing a child and the dark side of revenge. Unlike Taken which was garbage. It focused alot more on the action sequences, high car chases than the reality of loosing a child.
"Sailors fighting in the dance hall."
They are entirely different films, but obviously someone clearly retarded, like the guy above you, is not going to appreciate a great film such as Death Sentence, and largely prefers fast-paced, action-filled, macho mindless fun.

I like both, but shouldn't this be compared to the death wish series that starred Charles Bronson?
shareI don't even think that they are really comparable; Taken is relatively light in tone and it's more of an action movie than anything else, a bit of a throwback to the 80's-style action movie with less violence. Death Sentence, on the other hand, is much more of a suspenseful thriller with a rather heavy, dramatic tone all the way through, and it ends up being very tragic, which would be more in the vein of those gritty thrillers from the 70's. So, of course, Taken is more imposing in terms of action sequences and less on the acting front and the characters. Death Sentence has a more challenging lead role for sure, and Kevin Bacon is just excellent as always.
I would say Taken is the type of movie I would watch again if I wanted to be just entertained in a fun way. I would have to be in the mood for something more heavy like Death Sentence, as it is definitely not a feel good movie.
Bill Foster: I'm the bad guy?...How did that happen?
Thank you for one of the few objective, thoughtful posts of this board.

lol, some people are actually comparing the over-the-top action of Taken, a mainstream action flick, to the gritty, dark realism of Death Sentence, a raw and heartbreaking drama. Seriously, the only thing they have in common is the revenge theme.
Yes, Taken is very good (if we exlude the laughable sequels), nevertheless it's nothing more than a fast-paced, fairly cheesy "shoot 'em up" action movie. Hero beats bad guys and saves the day, end.
No wonder the idiots who hated Death Sentence loved Taken. Too much tragedy, sadness and character introspection, not enough unrealistic, fast-paced macho action for their taste.

I'd actually prefer Taken over Death Sentence. Don't get me wrong both are good films, but this is out of preference. What aspect I like about Taken was the fact that the film was steam-lined action, it was a damn good heart pulsing thriller that kept me as my seat as soon as Liam Neeson's character made that intimidating threat, once he was in Paris, and saw what he did your just wondering how far will he go. Although the drama was a little stale, and that ofet some parts were far too unrealistic or corny for a lack of better word. Just the casting, the story, the action, and the adreanline altogether makes it more enjoyable.
With Death Sentence, it has all the things Taken doesn't have. Mostly it's a psychological thriller with some good drama. But I felt the action sequences were a little weak, and by the time we get to the climax, it got me thinking should Nick be dead by now if he didn't know how to use a gun in the first place? However, I give the film credit for scratching the surface on how the characters felt real to their responses. I think the movie should have done more of that, and maybe change up some parts where Nick was confronting the gang at the end. I get at the end what Billy was saying, but I still think it could have been better twist to see Nick realizing what he did become, but the ending though was right on the mark for it's depressed ending.
