Zwartboek or Oorlogswinter ?
Which would you recommend?
shareThey are very, very different films. Oorlogswinter is interesting, but not as sexy or colourful (since the colours are muted) as Zwartboek, but Zwartboek has a magnificent direction and a good cast (which Oorlogswinter has as well!). Both films are very different and I would recommend them both for different reasons. I would also recommend Soldaat van Oranje.
"Well, me whole family's musical, Jeffo... even the sewing machine's a Singer." John Constantine
Thanks for the recommendation, I usually get the best recommended one movie every year from every country, I'd like to watch more than one but i can't; there are many countries in the world and i can't afford the time to watch them all. That's why i ask for the best recommendation. I understand they are from different years, but still I need to watch only one.
The last foreign movie I watched was another WWII movie from Poland, it was called Katyn.
Zwartboek is high on action and thrills but low on psychology and characterization. Oorlogswinter is a character driven movie that is very emotional, but can not compete on production value when compared to Zwartboek (which had five times more budget). Therefore, Zwartboek is much more like a Hollywood movie and Oorlogswinter is set much more in the tradition of great European films. It all depends on what you like. Dutch reviewers chose Oorlogswinter, but Zwartboek had slightly more people going to the cinema's (though that could also be because the movie had a much bigger advertising budget). Both movies were extremely succesful at the Dutch box office, Zwartboek was sold to many other countries, which still has to be seen wheither Oorlogswinter will do the same.
So, you pick. Both movies have great dvd's (and topnotch BlueRays) where English subtitles is an option.
hi zobayan,,,these are two totall different movies,,,but if i had to choose,,,,it would be zwartboek. greetings frank runia the netherlands
shareZwartboek definitely, Oorlogswinter only shows a little part of the war from a boys perspective.. only a few little things happen.
Ok the movie isn't really about that so you would need to like imagining you are a little boy yourself or something.
Well it's not bad, not at all for a dutch production so I rated 7. Zwartboek; 8.

Well, for me, I have no difficulty whatsoever in recommending Oorlogswinter over Zwartboek.
I saw them both in the last 6 days. Zwartboek is a Hollywoodesque romp (and gets a 6/10 from me); Oorlogswinter is a finely crafted drama (scoring an 8/10).
Soldaat van Oranje (1977) is an important Dutch movie in an historical sense but is now badly dated, IMHO.
Best Dutch movie? Try De tweeling (2002).
It depends on what you like.
Zwartboek is a hollywood type action movie, sex, gunfights and a storyline with holes in the plot so big you could hide a airship in them.
Oorlogswinter is a realistic, dramatic story about a boy and what he goes trough during the war.
Many may tell you Zwartboek was authentic and realistic, it was not.
It was a fantasy story made up of lots of little facts and then blended into a mess that made no sense.
If you care about history, accuracy, believability, Zwartboek is not for you.
I can only recommend Oorlogswinter.
Oorlogswinter and realistic? Well I saw an other movie then? The people looked so healthy in the middle of the "honger" winter. The boy ran trough a blockade of German soldiers and didn't even get shot. Oorlogswinter was very disappointing. Typical Dutch movie.
shareEasy choice, the movie Zwartboek is 10 times better in the story, acting and directing department. People saying otherwise don't know anything about good movies and should be ignored.
share'Oorlogswinter' didn't do it for me. I saw it a while ago and I don't remember a lot of examples, but that simple fact indicates to me that I didn't really like it.
Don't know why, but throughout the entire movie small things irritated me. 'Zwartboek' had me hooked the entire time, although it is far from the masterpiece some people make it out to be.
'Oorlogswinter' is a smaller movie, in all aspects. It is centered on a smaller cast, told from the viewpoint of a teenager and had a smaller budget. This can be a benefit as well as a drawback. I.m.o. it was too slow in most parts of the movie, but I don't think if it was sped up it would have helped. Usually I like movies that have a slower pace, but this one just felt too slow.
Regarding 'Oorlogswinter', I could have done without the obligatory Dutch movie sex scene, although it probably was in the book. And the shot from the front, exitwound on the side of the head was just silly (but that's me nitpicking).
All in all, 'Oorlogswinter' mostly felt like a movie aimed at a younger audience to me (12-16, like the book was), maybe that's why it didn't do it for me. Not saying that it's childish, cause it isn't.
So to answer your question: Zwartboek or Oorlogswinter ? If you mean which one should you see: I'd say both, they're both good movies (even if Oorlogswinter didn't do it for me, doesn't mean it's a bad movie). If you mean which one is better: that's just a matter of opinion, I liked Zwartboek more but maybe you'll like Oorlogswinter more.

Oorlogswinter is more authentic and simply has a better (more realistic and logical) story.
