Why so low? Why did you hate this?

I absolutely love this Wolfman film. I would really like to know why it was not well received by fans and viewers. Please tell me what it is that makes it rank so low…

Oh, I don't know... I just watched it again and I don't hate it anymore. I mean, there's a huge body count and it seems generally a bit excessive in that way. Hundreds of people were eye witnesses who will have to be convinced that didn't see what the saw and that just feels a bit off. I tend to favor a world where monsters and the supernatural are remarkable rather than familiar, but that's not any serious criticism. I don't love it, but it's okay.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't think it was very good either. I haven't seen it since it came out in theaters 14 years ago, but I remember the gore and effects being cool, but the story was really bland and kind of slow.

I still vividly remember when the movie came out it got a ton of bad reviews. I was interested in the movie because I love director Joe Johnston and Emily Blunt was hot! But the bad reviews scared me off, more than 10 years later I watched the movie. I'm shocked the movie wasn't bad, I would say it was above average.

reply

Definitely. I didn't see it at the cinema but I did get the DVD. Not bad at all. I gave it a 7/10.

Bad cgi, bad music, bad acting, everything is played off like a joke. It’s clear the actors were only here for a paycheck. Although it is watchable, but definitely feels like a B-movie despite the cast. I would give it a 5/10. Only for die-hard werewolf fans. This is more of a movie that friends watch while drinking beer and riffing on it.

I hated John Talbot being a villain. The Villagers hating John Talbot at the beginning was stupid. The villager falling into his own trap he set for the Wolf Man is stupid. The scene where Larry is put on display in front of so many people is dumb and predictable though I find it funny. But then this is coming from someone who saw the original Wolf Man before this came out and therefore thinks it is better.

They seemed perfectly reasonable to me. Talbot being the rich old loner guy in the mansion with a dead (by suicide they think) wife and recently murdered son seems like the type they would be envious/suspicious of. He had married a foreigner, and we know how they feel about gypsies. So them not thinking much of Talbot seemed very plausible. It's not like he was shown to have a friendly relationship with them.

And as for the villager falling into his trap, these are just rural folks, not trained trappers. At night, scared out of their wits about a beast, it's very likely one of them would run right into a trap forgetting where it is in the dark.

I admit I just prefer the original.
