He could have just written that he couldn't speak for medical reasons, waste five leaves from the trees, and keep showing the paper throughout the two days, and just shut the hell up. But of course, no movie then... it's just a weakness that it has to ignore obvious solution in order to have "a story".
shareI suspect anytime he showed the paper to someone it would count as him speaking to them and more leaves would fall. Also odds are everyone would want a more detailed explanation or even a doctors note. There is also the issue of people wanting him to write notes or type to communicate. I also think he was a bit of a control freak so he was determined to make it work and keep his life the way it was. It wasn't until he fully let go and made peace that he was giving the second chance.

He clearly pantomimed numerous times that he couldn't speak and people understood. Not a "plot hole" in any case.

alrighty, people, read the original post, and the replies that followed, and all I feel I can say to these remarks is this:
CAN'T ANYONE JUST WATCH A MOVIE WITHOUT FEELING LIKE THEY HAVE TO DISSECT IT? it's called "the entertainment industry" for a reason: you're supposed to sit back & relax, and have a laugh, or a scream, or get all caught up in the action/intrigue...yada yada yada, as elaine benes would say. just relax, and enjoy the movie. if it makes you giggle or cry, then it's had an impact. if you walk away after the movie with just a shrug of your shoulder, then it obviously was not your cup of tea.
but i think this film had an important message -just had an odd way of stating it.
maybe if anyone had just taken in the movie, the message would've gotten through.
