I'm pretty desensitized (sp?) to violence in film and have no problem watching 99% of violent movies, but the torture scene in this movie just really got to me somehow. I actually felt light-headed and even a bit sick. The smashed up fingers, the screaming, just what the hell they were going to do to him next, and the overall intensity of it. Maybe partly because it was so well acted, not sure. Haven't seen any similar comments, am I the only one?
It freaked me out a bit because I wasn't expect it...like the guy lazily picks up the hammer, says something, and next second Leo is screaming in his chair. Really unpredictable and graphic. Great scene though. __________________________________________
I think there are certain types of violence one can take better - or not as good - as others. While I'm pretty sensitive to most displays of violence in movies, the worst for me is people getting hit with blunt objects.
For example Casino, when that one guy gets beaten to death with a baseball bat. Or Heavenly Creatures, the mother being beaten to death with a brick. Pan's Labyrinth, the guy getting his face smashed in with a wine bottle. Misery, when that old witch breaks the man's ankles with a hammer.
I just can't watch this stuff and always have to turn my head or close my eyes.
Perhaps it's the same with you and you just dislike certain types of violence, or perhaps even certain weapons, more than others?
I didn't find the scene in Body of Lies too bad though because it was so sudden that I had no time to mentally prepare myself for it. I think it's a lot worse when you can see it coming and go on thinking "Oh noooo, don't do that, the poor guy!"
TV violence doesn't really desensitize people, it just lets them think they are. Mostly so they can brag about how nothing on tv bothers them. Ho Hum.
If you think the violence you see on tv resembles the real thing, you will be in for a rude awakening if you ever witness in person. Video beheading are just the beginning.
Take explosions in movies and on tv. People get tossed around, even die, but the real thing is beyond explanation. flesh is fragile and becomes twisted into unrecognizable forms.
