I've always thought she'd be capable of great things in a drama, and now here it is. Let's hope it's as good or better as "The Good Girl," and that Molly gets the amount of attention that Jennifer Anniston deserved for her Mike White film. Does anyone else think Molly could become a very accomplished dramatic actress somewhere down the line?
The only time you can really use Molly Shannon was in her guest appearance in Scrubs, and even then it wasnt all that good because she had a drama scene.
Just saw this movie at Sundance. The whole cast was there, except for Laura Dern. Molly did a great job and it was interesting to see her in a more dramatic role. I compare this role to that of Will Ferrill's in Stranger Than Fiction. Their comedic talents are still on display, but instead of being overbearing, they take a back seat. Oscar for Molly? No. But this proves that she can do a whole lot more than just comedy.
She's not an Oscar actress, not that she needs to be really, because I think she's talented in her own right, in her line of comedy and everything. But I'm sure she can balance, and I'm sure we'll see that in Year of the Dog. However, yelling Oscar just at the moment may be too premature. The film will be great, even if it's not Oscar friendly.
"I don't like so much freedom down there. It makes me tingle in my giblets."
I am a big fan of Molly Shannon. I just 'stumbled' across the trailer for this film on Youtube. Now, I can't wait to see it!
I do think that Molly has the ability to shine in some more dramatic roles, and I really like 'quirky' films. I thought 'The Good Girl' was excellent; this makes me have high hopes for 'Year of the Dog'. :)
I am not usually one to make bold, subversive, argument-inciting comments, but in this case, I will. Molly Shannon is never brilliant, funny, or so much as mediocre in anything. As a matter of fact, I would go far as to say anything that has Molly Shannon in it is somewhat degraded by her presence. That's a bitter pill to swallow, too--I like several movies with her (case in point--Wet Hot American Summer, in which I always fast forward through her part). She plays the EXACT same character in every role she's ever taken. Some actors can pull that off, and still be wonderful. She is not one of those actors. Now, I am not passing judgement on this film without seeing it, nor will I, because I know Mike White is a good screenwriter. However, unfortunately, I will probably never watch this movie just because I despise her so much. Sorry to all those Molly Shannon lovers out there...anyone else agree with me?
Agree with Chrisheel. I've seen the film, and Molly's performance does nothing to enhance this disappointing effort from Mike White. In fact, she's downright grating. I'd say Molly Shannon is an acquired taste . . . sort of like cigarettes. The first time you encounter said cigarettes or Molly Shannon, you know it's not good for you . . . but you make youself encounter cigarettes or Molly again and again - and after a while you convince yourself they are good. The day Molly Shannon wins an Oscar is the day I'll start smoking again.
This is a must see movie! 'Year of the dog' is a lovable film with a series of power messages about searching for happiness and the power of following your dreams. The core of this movie is about searching for an identity, something every viewer of the movie can relate to. We all know Molly is hilarious, but in addition to being a comical genius in this movie she also played a dramatic role very simplistically and beautifully. I am impressed by her acting and the way she was able to convey so much emotion and life in her facial expressions. Overall the acting and storyline was amazing in this film! This is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. I can't recommend a movie any higher and hope you will enjoy it.
