How is this movie not revered more?

I love it. I mean the cast is incredible. Everything Robert Duvall touches is brilliant. Mark Wahlberg is a great actor, Eva Mendes and Joaquin was brilliant in this movie and it makes you wonder why he quit acting.

As far as mob movies go, this isn't the Godfather, nor am I saying it is. It isn't Goodfellas either. But in my opinion it isn't any worse than American Gangster or The Departed, two of my other favourites. Why it never gets the respect is beyond me.

That scene in the coke factory when Vadim is suspicious of Bobby is one of the most tense build ups in movie history. I never understand how it doesn't get the respect.

I agree.i don't know how it's never recognized when people mention great crime dramas.this movie has good actors and it captured the atmosphere of New York City to a T. obviously it has a 7 rating so it's a great movie.everyone I talk to loves it but on this site people seem to sleep on it like it's garbage because something makes them angry like Phoenix fucked up face or it wasn't realistic or their just too damn fucked up to realize it's a movie and it's not real life LMAO

It's one if those movies that didn't get alot of hype because Denzel wasn't starring. Great movie and great cast

This movie was Off on so many levels for me:

1. The cast look and don't act like they're even related
2. What era is this story taking place? I couldn't tell if it was suppose to be 1978 or 1998
3. I couldn't buy into the idea that Joaquin Phoenix came from a family of blue collar cops and he somehow rose
to be some nightclub king which invariably would make him both a pimp and a drug dealer by default, which in turn means he's in bed with organized crime yet the movie doesn't even hint that this is the case. Instead it proposes that those elements only collide with his nightclub business at a minimal level. Bitch please.

For me this movie feels it missed the mark in the editing room due to either studio or director interference, or both. The story is already there but the family tension between the black sheep brother and his law enforcement family felt jumbled in contrast to the subplot involving the Slavic drug lord.

I also didn't care for the resolution with club tycoon brother becoming a cop in the end. He didn't deserve redemption and should have either been killed or run out of town, living with the guilt he brought onto himself.
