One scene to prove that Adam Sandler deserved an Oscar for this

The Courtroom Scene.

I don't think I've ever felt more depressed in my entire life. That scene was incredibly emotional and well performed by Sandler. Some people say he was wrong for this part, I disagree. I believe that maybe Sandler was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

I just saw this today and I agree with the OP. I thought Adam Sandler was wonderful for the part. And I also agree that the courtroom scene was very effective. I kept wondering, how can the judge (Donald Sutherland) not see what they were doing to him. It was well done and Sandler and Cheadle both should at least have been recognized somewhere for their performances. I've been wanting to see Sandler in more dramatic parts ever since I saw his half-comedy/half-dramatic performance in Click. It's nice to see comedians branching out to others genres.

I'd been waiting for this movie from Sandler since Punch Drunk Love, which was ... borderline serious but too ridiculous to really count. haha.

BEES?!

"I think he should just stick to comedy, he's a lightweight when compared to the likes of oscar winners like Daniel Day Lewis, Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and others"

No one compared sandler to any of those guys, that was a pointless statement

I agree 100%. I saw this first in the theatre, and there was not a dry eye around, men included. All through the movie, I found myself thinking, wow, I can't believe that this is Adam. But then, i thought he did a great job in Spanglish as well. But, I think it is going to be hard for him to be taken seriously as a dramatic actor while he stil does the slapstick comedies. Of course, I love them too. But, I noticed that once Tom Hanks got recognized by the Academy, he stepped off doing the comedy bits.

I also thought the scene after the courtroom was great, where he addressed his in-laws. It was to the point, and very effective.

Could not agree more. I did not want to like Sandler as a dramatic actor, but could not help myself in this film. He was perfect for the role and nailed it. He has obviously taken the craft of acting much more seriously in recent years. He was totally believable. Great film, great characters, great acting.

I agree with the op omg Sandler was great. I think ppl just like to diss him because he's known as a comedic actor, but in reality he's a very good actor. So he started out as a comic ppl can at least be honest and tell the truth. The man is very good.

yeah, the OP is right. That scene where he is singing "love reign o'er me" in the court room was awesome. Quadrophenia is a great album. The movie is also great.

2nd best scene. The ordeal with the cops. i thought about ending it the very same way about 3 years ago. That scene freaked me out.

man tears were almost shed.

it would have helped his chances if he could have done the scene in which he first tells johnson about his family in one take, u can tell that it was obviously cut every so often....

definitely not deserving of an oscar, but a good role that shows he can play a dramatic part

When I first saw this film I could nto stop crying. Everyone I know who has bothered to see the film has cried. It is incredibly depressing. The scene where he has that beautiful speech in the court room is just... wow. This could have been so wrong, and when I read it I groaned inwardly. It was amazing. Saw what you want about Sandler but for me he completely nailed this role.

And this is coming from the person who wasn't really a fan of Punch-Drunk Love :S and HATED spanglish. And loved all the slapstick films. But Reign Over Me is probably the best Sandler film.
