Give me animes that are more depressing than this..

Anyone know of any? I'm pissed because I was watching this on youtube and accidentally viewed the top comment on the last episode and it spoiled the ending.. I think it would have been much more moving had I not known the ending. But yeah, super depressing animes like this please.

A few suggestions:

Grave of the Fireflies... possibly the most heartbreaking film ever made.
Casshern Sins... it may be about robots fighting but it is pretty depressing throughout.
Gunslinger Girl... the final episode of season one is a bit of a tearjerker.
Haibane Renmei... a gentle story with some sad moments
She: The Ultimate Weapon... Don't expect many characters to survive.
Kino's Journey... A couple of tearjerking episodes.

Finally:

Clannad and Clannad: Afterstory: I've not seen these but I have heard it is pretty tragic; especially Afterstory.

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

Grave of the Fireflies for the win! If you want depressing then look no further. It gives you a nice heaping chunk of reality and it's not watered down. Worth watching but make sure you have a bottle of Zoloft on hand just on case.

Offhand, I can't think of any anime that will do a better job of making you think the human race might actually deserve to be extinguished by the "monsters."

5 centimeters per second, it's drama but i've never watched anything so depressive.

reply

"Now and then, here and there (Ima, soko ni iru boku)" It broke me.

reply

^^^ YES! That was the first anime series I ever watched and I've been hooked ever since. In addition to that one, all of the Key anime series are very emotional: Air, Kanon & Clannad.

A superhero never reveals their true identity

reply

You forgot Angel Beats as part of the Key series.

reply

Thank you. I haven't seen that one yet but I'll be sure to add that to my watch list. Do you think it is as good as the others?

Robin wishes he was me

reply

I'm in the minority here, but I watched that show after hearing how *beep* up and depressing it was and came out vastly disappointed. I didn't feel like it was disturbing, depressing, or even that good. Also I have literally never hated a main character more than Now and Then, Here and There.
I don't have a suggestion for you, but Elfen Lied is WAY more depressing than Now and Then, Here and There. And Elfen Lied has a happy ending and everything.

Wolf's Rain, if it doesn't depress you nothing will...

Barefoot Gen.

I have to agree with Grave of the Fireflies..

"Stink, stink, stink, Mr Murdock!"

Neon Genesis Evangelion + End of Evangelion
Mirai Nikki (future diary) It's weird but really really sad at the end.

But, personally I don't think there's anything more depressing/disturbing then Evangelion. It's my second favorite anime.

reply

Watch the Mirai Nikki OVA for a slight continuation (and massive change) to the ending. It seems to be canon, although I haven't actually looked up whether people say it is.

reply

That redial ova is complete cr*p and totally kills everything the original series was..

This review pretty much says it all.

The last episode of the regular season was the one that did all the quick wrap-ups. The OVA focused on inane gags and the resolution of Yuno and Yuki's story. I won't defend the animation quality in the OVA because honestly I watched a low quality stream so I can't talk. But as for the plot, the end of the final regular season episode (post credits) set it up so Yuno would be coming into Yuki's "god domain". I was pretty happy with the ambiguous ending of the regular season, but the hummingbird review saying that the OVA attempted to put a bow on the ending is BS. The OVA just established what led to Yuno finding her way toward Yuki for the final time. Yes, I agree that this show is best as a thriller/action/psychological-horror/whatever-the-fark but since the show already established that the 3rd world was a nirvana of sorts, what's wrong with seeing how Yuno ended up changing God-Yuki's future?

reply

The Mirai Nikki OVA didn't change anything... you already see Yuki's phone change to say that Yuno came to see him, and Murumuru refers to "them" in the final omake. But the tone was totally different and the obligatory beach crap was a waste of time.

As a whole, that anime had such potential. Minene and Yuno were really great characters. But so much unending whiny crap from Yuki, unbelievable reactions/interactions with his parents, and so many of the diary owners being ridiculous (the 5 year old and the big-head woman on the top of that list) really brought it down. I still enjoyed most of it, but it had such wasted potential...
