It's worth mentioning that CJ and her mother in particular aren't entirely blameless for Lewellyn's death, imo. Everyone in town must have heard they were going to El Paso, including the Mexican in a suit. The old lady should have been wearing a muzzle or kept in the dark as long as possible, but CJ makes no attempt to even quiet her.
