A fighter jet followed it until it was over an unpopulated area so they could safely shoot it down, fearing it would be used to fly into another building.
The debris was scattered over a hundred miles, which is consistent with the plane blowing up at high altitude. You don't see many photos of the crash site. There's no impact/crater/gouge in the earth because there isn't any. It's just bits and pieces of wreckage strewn over a very large area.
