lucy liu's character seems like a poor rendition of...

kate winslet's character "clementine" in eternal sunshine of the spotless mind.
she's trying to play the "quirky" role but it's not as believable or endearing as kate winslet's.

just my two cents :)

can't wait to see this movie, anyway, because i love cillian murphy!

I'm not a Lucy fan usually but I liked her in this movie so I bought it.

Clem was too neurotic. Violet was fun to watch.

I understand that its a question of taste but i've never found Liu annoying or a bad actor. She might not ever get an oscar but she upholds my supension of disbelif every time.

I think she nailed the character and made her extremely likable. I think i've watched this flick 4 times since i got it and it isn't for Kilian murphy.

Yeah, obviously there are myriad "wacky female" characters we can compare her to, but I agree with chaney1888's suggestions of the original - Katherine Hepburn in Bringing Up Baby. I've seen that movie at least 20 times, and I still laugh out loud whenever I watch it.

I need my 1987 DG20 Casio electric guitar set to mandolin, yeah...

Lucy was hilarious and charming in this movie. She should get more roles.

I agree with the OP. That was my first thought, too. Neil is similar to the "boring" nice guy Joel, and Violet is a bad rendition of Clem- trying to live life to the fullest, hating the boredom but really wanting the nice guy. And as someone else stated, yes, Clem is a more neurotic than Violet, but that's why I like her. It gives actual insight into why she is the way she is. Clem was a fully developed character with her own flaws, and Violet is an unbelievable version of that personality.

The main difference is that Clementine brought more flavor into Joel's life and pulled him out of his shell, and Violet dragged Neil completely out of his element and tried to change him. She claimed to really like Neil, but seemed to dislike everything about him other than him being nice. She knocked the fact that he liked movies so much and tried to completely sever his ties with his movies and his store, she complained when he wanted to watch basketball instead of play with her. It was all about her.

Cillian was great as Neil, but his character was also a little too underdeveloped for my taste.

The main issue I have with the character Violet is that her idea of living life to the fullest meant breaking the law, again and again. She crossed the line from quirky and exciting to an adrenaline junkie who felt the need to drag Neil down with her.
