9/11 should have been the ending

This film should have ended with the planes crashing onto the WTC. 9/11 is alluded to in the film for good reason. The mujahideen, and Osama bin Laden among them, known as "freedom fighters" in the US, first received American arms and were trained to fight a jihad against the Soviets, then fought each other, until the Pakistan-backed taliban controlled the country. Check out the Wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mujadeen Also read "Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and the Road to 9/11," by Lawrence Wright, NY, Knopf, 2006 p.146. Actually American aid to the mujahideen started about 6 months before Soviet intervention according to Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security advisor to President Carter: "According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise. Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention." Or the ending could be whats happening in Afghanistan now that the US Troops are the new Soviets killing civillians and blowing up houses.

blowing up civilians and houses is bad, got it

so they afghans want the taliban back? they were better off then?

it is better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it

Weren't you paying attention to the movie?

You can't say that something was "good" or "bad" because of unexpected things that happen after you make your choices. The best that you can ever do is to see what's in front of you, take your best guess as to what's going to happen, and then either take action or do nothing.

At the time that our government was helping the Mujahideen no one thought that the country's actions would come back to bite us in the butt.

I completely agree. The actions of Charlie Wilson directly led to the events of 9/11. A Soviet takeover of Afghanistan would have been the best thing to happen to both the United States and the Soviet Union. Now we again have Obama supporting the Al Qaeda backed Syrian rebels against a more secular Syrian government. I shudder at what the end result will be.

This may have already been answered since 2008, but if you watch the movie again, and listen closely at the end where Gust is trying to warn Charlie (on the balcony of some party) that some fanatical group is taking Afghan you can hear a plane go overhead (it's a very deliberate moment since both of them are real quiet).
